Our local pro shop has a 2002 hoyt protec, xt 2000 limbs, redline cam, looks like new, for $400. he said it was a $700 bow new. I like the long a/a and brace height.
but is that a good cam?

While you are waiting for someone to reply that is personally familiar with the bow, I will comment on a couple of things that I was told about similar bows.
When I became interested in the first " full-split" limb bows, a mechanical engineer nephew of mine convinced me not to purchase one. He laid out all the possible problems that could occur with 4 spindly limbs being torqued in varying degrees and directions. I was convinced.
Regarding the " skeleton" alloy riser, I read that they tend to produce excessive vibration.
I take it that the bow was used, being you said the bow " ...looks like new." Why did the previous owner trade the bow less than 1 year later?

The bow is absolutely one of the best bows to ever be produced by anyone.BAR NONE.The only problem is it doesn' t have the cam 1/2 which is a better cam system imo.
There is another problem I noticed.Hoyt didn' t offer the Redline in 2002 on the protec, unless it is a special order, but I doubt that because they used the duall track idler in 2002 so I would think it is a 2001 model. The redline isn' t as good as the versa or excell that was offered in 2002,imo and I have owned a bow with the redline cam and it was nice but not as nice as the versa or excell.
I had a 2001 Protec with the Versa cam and shot some of my best scores ever with it.
I think if the bow is a 2001 that the price would be negotiable and you should be able to get it down a bit. Then I would think the price would be ok but is a bit high right now.You will have to make that decission for yourself and know what bows sell for in your area.I sold a 2001 Ultratec setup ready to hunt with arrows and everything for $400.00 this year. This was to my brother in law and I think I give him a deal.
As far as the limbs are concerned,DON' T BE CONCERNED,they are some of the best available if not the best.Just take a look at the Hoyt wins this year and that should tell you something about there quality and accuracy.I havn' t heard of a single limb failure since going to the XT2000 limbs. The first split limbs weren' t all that great but these limbs are fabulous.
Also the riser design takes the vibration away from your hand making them some of the smoothest shooting bows today.

Thanks T Fox. to be honest, I don' t trust these local guys as far as I can throw em.
at least not at this particular shop. it may very well be a 2001, and he just told me it was a 2002. is there anyway that I can tell what year model it is by lookin at the bow, other than the redline cam? again, thanks for your help.

Yes there is 1 thing you can check. The limbs on the 2001 models are 1" longer than the 2002 models. The 2002 limbs are 14" long and the 2001 limbs are 15" long.

bogobble, TFOX is 100% correct about the bow. No redline cams on a 2002 protec.
He is also correct that hoyts split limbs are as good as any limb on the planet.
For 400.00 you can find a 2003 protec with cam.5 cams. I see them for sale on another site. You can e-mail me from my profile and I will point you in the right direction.
The 2002 hoyts were good, but IMO, the 2003 bows with the cam & 1/2 are the best bows they ever made! Absolute tack drivers.
