Default I have my own huge food plot!!

Well....its not mine

But its planted along a two mile strip of thick productive woods I have been hunting for years. Seems as though a bird club is leasing the land and has planted tons and tons of Sorghum. The field is almost two miles long and about 1/2 mile wide.

This field has been fallow for years. Last year I noticed many more deer than usual hitting the greens. Since it is private property I did not venture out to investigate. Well, I met up with one of the birders and it is indeed Sorghum and some wild grasses for cover.

I have directed much of my attention to scouting these bachelor herds. Most evenings have about 40 -50 deer in the field and atleast 10 -15 of them are bucks.
I have glassed two shooters already. One is already forked out well past his ears and the other looks to be a crazy non-typical with great mass and a number of points.[8D]

The other side of the field is a refuge and it seems most " but not all" of the deer come from that side - smart little suckers

But the woods I am in has many deer also, and I am hoping all that crop will produce some nice racks. This is a pretty cool present for a puplic land guy and I am pretty psyched over it.

So the question: Is sorghum good for antler growth??

In my farm hand experience, milo, or grain sorgum here in Nebraska dosen' t get much activity from deer. Birds,,,,, YES!!! Deer,,,, not that I' ve seen in 31 years of hunting them. In a different state like your own it may attract them some but milo has a bitter tast to it IMO. I live on a small farm and watch deer LOTS from my dining room window and what I' ve seen, they like weeds or forbs. Deer don' t seem to want to stay anywhere very long and gorge themselves on anything but soybeans in my area. Mostly they are samplers and allways on the move. Milo will fall very easily if snowed on and it goes down flat with a wet snow. Wheat IMO is the best mid to late season attractant for deer in states where snow is possible in mid October.
Let us know how the milo works for you this year and good luck

Walks, Thanks for the info

I must admit I know squat about food crops

I have never really hunted around anything planted in my life. I couldn' t tell sorghum from alfalfa from corn....LOL.

But whatever it is the deer here are loving it - be it sorghum or weeds. it is also the only planted crop in the area.

My only hope is that it contains some good protien for antler growth. I will not be hunting along the field - I will leave that to the 10 other pickups that will be parked along these woods. I will be a few hundred yards back in the super thick ugly stuff I call home. So come October I don' t care if the deer never set foot in that field

Thanks again.

Rack,

Sorghum is very for up-land birds, which would explain why they planted it. It is also very good for turkey, if you are into turkey hunting. I' ll be next spring, that is gonna be one major strutting and pecking area for gobblers. Deer will also consure sorghum but its mainly used for birds. Migratory birds will also use the food plot.

I can' t find any info on nutrient levels, but, that is a VERY large food plot, and, when there was nothing there before, it will surely help out. I believe that I heard that it was very high in nutrients but wasn' t very pallatable for deer, but, I could be wrong on that. If they are eating it in your area, I would say that you are going to be in for some AWSOME hunting this fall. Every bit of food helps and that is enough food to draw deer from miles.

P.S. Today, I finally was able to plant one of my plots. I planted turnips and rape seed in a funnel of woods on my property. The woods are very open and it sees alot of deer activity in the fall due to acorns dropping. I had it all preped and ready to plant, I just had to wait for a good day (too much rain), and, today was the day. Hopefully in the next month or so it will be all grown up and being hit hard by deer

Last winter when Wall Mart was closing out the archery and hunting stuff, I bought 3 bags of Biologic Full Draw. You' re supposed to plant this stuff in the fall but I planted it this late spring and I can' t believe how big it' s grown. It' s about 24 inches tall and is very thick, deer should be getting all the nutrition they can this time of the year, not in the fall. In the fall season there is lots of waste grain for them to live on in my state and IMO, if they are fed the best early, they' ll do better late

From what I have seen down here, Deer take to sorghum okay when it first comes up but dont care for it as much when it matures. Its great for doves and turkeys but not the biggest draw to deer unless there isnt much else in the area.
Hope it works out for you.
Unless they have mixed some legumes in with it, the protien levels probally wont be high enough to make a difference. They probally mixed some summer wheat and/or oats with the sorghum. Thats probally whats attracting the deer more than the sorghum.
