Went from vanes to feathers back to vanes. The vanes seem to last longer and hold up better in bad weather. The feathers are more forgiving but in the long run I like the vanes.

depends really. I really like duravanes for most of my hunting but I do sometimes use feathers. I can get either to shoot great but I do think the feathers in general shoot a little tighter group beyond 30 yards with fixed blad broadheads. It is a very small difference & honestly the 4" duravanes I use most of the time hold up well even at 60 yards with fixed blade heads.
Generally I just like vanes better for hunting since they are tough & brush won' t damage them as much. for indoor & 3-D I only use 3-D duravanes and honestly wouldn' t want to shoot such short feathers. of course this is just my opinion!
If you shoot traditional then feathers are the only thing you should consider! nothing is more " cool" than a good long bow, wood arrows, and feather fletching!
try both & see what works for you! thats the best thing to do. I switch back & forth every so often and both perfrom great. Just depends on what you like!

Use to shoot feathers but switched to vanes several years ago. I hunt whenever I can, be it in the rain, sleet, snow, or sunshine. Vanes seem to hold up better in wet weather.
I have been using Bohning Vanes and Dura Vanes. I' m starting to lean toward going strictly with the Bohning vanes.

I have been thinking about quitting using fletching all together.
I have been experimenting with Turbonocks and really like how they have improved my accuracy. about the only thing I dont like about them is how I keep busting nocks and ruining arrows group tuning.[8D]

Do this little experiment......go downrange (behind a building or something very, very safe) and have a friend shoot some feathers and then some vanes......I' d say the feathers are at least twice as loud and if you have any seperation in the feather it' ll be even louder. IME it is more pronounced w/ speeds over 260 fps.

The numerous advantages of feathers vs. vanes:
http://www.archeryexchange.com/infor...%20Vanes.shtml
Also, feathers are not always noisy, nor are feathers always noisier than any vane.
There are several factors that introduce noise when using feathers, as there can be when using vanes e.g., bow and shafts well matched, too much helical (feather mounted shafts can be shot well with straight fletch), too much speed behind a fixed head causing shaft to fly erratic and therefore (possibly) causing feather fletch to " buzz," cheap feathers, etc.
Ever hear the noise made by a vane that is too soft or one that has become deformed?

For once,I agree with c903
Yes in general terms you could expect more noise from feathers but there are always cures to every problem.
What I really agree with is the noise that some of the most popular vanes make nowadays.I couldn' t believe it.I sold my bow to my brother in law and the arrows went with it.I shot a 3-d couse with him and I couldn' e believe I actually was hunting with those arrows.I could hear them all the way to the target. When I was shooting the bow,I never noticed it but when standing from the side.WOW.
I had already made up my mind to go back to Flex Fletch before this but this just made the decision to spend the extra cash that much easier.
Feathers just aren' t durable enough for me.I shoot entirely too much and I am hard on them.Vanes will hold up better, especially Flex Fletch.

I shoot both, but very much prefer feathers. I shoot flipper rests, Cavalier FreeFlyte, NAP Centerest flipper, and a GKF flipper rest I' ve had so long I don' t remember offhand what it' s called. When I decide to use a release my rest is a GKF Golden Premier.
I agree feathers aren' t necessarily louder than vanes. But my experience is opposite TFOX' s. My vanes get shot full of holes and ripped up so bad that I have to refletch vanes at least 4 to 1 over feathers. When a vane is torn, it' s shot. Feathers can usually be straightened out and steamed right back. They' ll even shoot good with a section of the quill shot out of them. When I hunt with feathers, I always stick a gallon size freezeer bag in my fanny pack when it looks like rain. Spray the feathers with Scotchguard the night before and pop the bag over them when the rain hits. No problem.
I mostly keep vanes on hand just in case it looks like I' ll be shooting a tournament in the rain. No way to keep feathers dry in a tournament.

Feather' s three main problems are: (1) The " NOISE" factor!! How many times have you rubbed up against them, or brushed them agaist a tree, clothes, etc!! They are " very noisy" compared to vanes!!! (2) The Durability factor!! Face it, feathers wear 50X faster than any vane ever could!! (3) In Wet conditions, feathers are the worst!! Yeah, you can put what ever stuff you want on feathers, only to have to re-apply the stuff. Why bother???? Vanes are the best over-all for each catagory!!
The only time someone would have to use " feathers only" would be shooting a stick bow off the shelf!! When shooting a modern compound bow, why would you even think of shooting feathers? Makes no sense to me!! After shooting them for almost 15 years, I would never go back to feathers again!!
