Finally found my deer

Well that's cool, at least you know where to go to try and find him. Hopefully you'll get the rack.
Its just amazing to me that so many deer get "found" by other folks, and some in such a short period of time. One post earlier said he shot it right atdark and first thing the next morning all he foundwas a gut pile. ??? [:-]
Makes you wonder some times...who's looking over your shoulder?

It was pretty obvious when half my Gold Tip was laying on the ground beside the carnage

That's like.....3 deer that people (from this forum)have shot now.....lost.....and then found the gut pile/etc... from.
That's pretty freakin remarkable if you asked me. How many people are out there roaming the woods? It's archery season.
Question....
When you find a gut pile in the woods....how do you know it was from your deer?

Well seriously....I know there are people in the woods all the time (even on land they shouldn't be on).....but how many times has anyone here ever walked up on an obviously freshly killed deer (from a hunting wound)?
It's amazing it happens as much as it obviously does.

Just ribbing you! I have walked up on 2 in my 14yrs of deer hunting. Both were during shotgun season and I was tracking my own deer at the time. I never have during bow season. I guess it just depends on how many hunters are in your woods. I'm lucky to have a low population of hunters on and around the land I hunt in IL.

Something does not sound right about these events. I would think if some one is going to take a deer that they did not shoot, they are not going to take the time skin it right there. It would be more like a grab and run if you ask me.Now if just the antlers were missing you could have sold me the story hook, line and sinker.

I had to get home and sleep some before going back out to look for him. It was a good 6-7 hours before i located where he expired. If anyone was up at dawn going to any of these stands they would have seen the blood and most likely he was laying in sight of the other hunters. Since it was daybreak, and nobody was on its trail, they probably figured it was a lost kill. That was my thinking, and I dont much blame them. Its raining today and i didnt get a chance to follow where I thought I had trailed him, but it was on someones elses property and they have the right to do what they want.
I cant say that if I showed up at my stand in the morning and there was a halfway decent buck freshly killed I wouldnt have done the same. Granted I would have waited a few hours to see if anyone showed, but I was snuggled in a warm bed after a night in freezing darkness. I cant be angry, just dissapointed that I ran out of batteries and light. I have a good idea of who it was, or at least the landowner so I may go to him tomorrow and ask if he has some extra backstraps for me.
I pulled up google earth to get an idea of how far I trailed him and if you see the dense forest I ended up in, Im just thinking the lord that I had my lighter a half pack of smokes, and some snacks. I wasnt sure how long I would be there but the best thing I did, and I would suggest it to everyone, stay put in this situation. They ended up having the state police helicopter on its way with FLIR, but luckily I lasted until sunup and got my bearings straight. I had no idea I had trailed him for no less than 3 miles into the abyss!

To people that would take someone's deer, you aren't a true deer hunter. That ain't right even if it's on your property. Let the person get it, and if they don't well, oh well. If it happens to be a buck take it's rack, but let it be there for a couple of days. If a person can't find it in a couple of days, then they probably won't find it, and they probably already gave up. Give the person at least 2 days.
