I gave you a personal example of the first deer I shot .......... i regretted it ... it was because I listened to others ..... when a kid comes on here and says he doesn't want his 1st deer to be a fawn and there are guys telling him he should shoot one anyway for the experience .... it says alot about what hunting is to those guys ...[&o]

No one did, Tony. I answered your question. You asked (in an interrogative form...)...
I answered...."Exactly" (read - YES).
I then added that "I" OR ANYONE ELSE shouldn't need to worry about what anyone else thinks about why we take a legal deer.
Kinda goes back to the "shoot what you want" thing, doesn't it?
The deer (fawn) in question is taken legally. It serves a purpose.
I would NEVER, EVER be a proponent of someone taking a deer they would , at the time, or subsequnetly "regret" taking. But the deer, as I said, would serve a purpose. It would also be taken legally.
What the problem with this scenario?

I guess a lesser fawn can be the sacrificial lamb so he can be "ready" when the one he wants comes by

First of all, nobody told me to take a fawn for the expierence.

I would be thrilled with a fawn for a first. How do I explain being happy with a fawn but more happy with a giant buck or even a mature doe? Its not about the prize at the end its how you got there. When I went to the bowshop yesturday and I paid with my own money that I had earned, It made me feel good. When I take a deer with equipment that I paid for, and scouted, and patterned the deer, that is the icing on the cake.
PT, I dont listen to anyone on which deer I take. I aggree with GMMT because I also believe that getting the first kill is important so your ready for larger deer. He didnt put the idea of shooting a fawn into my head.
You stated you would be thrilled, so you don't fit that mold ...

Tony where do you come up with these things (vividly wild scenarios)that have NO purpose in this discussion? You're surprising me.
Explain how my hunting and yours is "different" (to one another)....other than the fact that you enjoy killing.
Are you not reading my posts....are just not comprehending them? IF HE WOULD HAVE NO REGRETS IN DOING SO.......
.....then yeah....I think he should take the first ethical shot that he gets. I'd tell (and have told) my son the exact same thing. I'd tell ANYONE getting started in deer hunting the same thing. You seem to want to discard my caveat to make your point. That's unfair....and a misrepresentation of my advice.
After the fact (after "taking")...and pure drivel....although "How about the guy that hunts to brag to everyone else what he's killed??" is a personal reason to hunt. As long as he's hunting ethically and legally.....I've got no problemwith this. We probably see this more than we care to point out.
It's not MY reason, though, and I don't have to understand it OR agree withit.

but you possibly did when you justified another's response to ,"get one under the belt" no matter what it is ...

so a man can kill deer and let them rot, and that wouldn't be wrong in your opinion? Or he could kill them and let them sit in his freezer until he throws them out??? How about the guy that hunts to brag to everyone else what he's killed??
There IS such a thing as "the wrong reason"

How about this..... Advice to beginners..... It is recommended to shootat the 1st legal deer that gives you a good chance. BUT if said deer is one that you really wouldn't be happy with, don't shoot. HOWEVER, if looking to gain overall experience, you might not want to be too picky or you'll restrict yourself from experiencing everything that is involved with killing a deer.
And Jeff, I have one teeny nit pick with a common theme of yours. The whole "mile of difference between shooting at a deer and putting it on the ground". For many that may be true, but for some that mile can be more expressed in feet or inches. If bowtech360 "passes" on a deer & Rob "passes" on a deer. I think the deer in Rob's situation came MUCH closer to death had he decided to shoot. Like I said it's a small nit pick, and many times your phrase holds true, but not always.
