To answer your ? of is it fair, I don' t really know? My only imput here is that we' ve found that if you spend enough time tuning your bow, matching broadheads w/arrows, you can get very good groups. It takes a lot of time and many arrows shot with diff. broadheads but it can be done! Good Luck.

I Lived in Pacific Beach (San Diego) for three years, and for the life of me I have never heard of the Laguna Mountains! Is that anywhere near Romona? or El Centro?

I lived in the San Diego County area for 28 years,In the Julian and Escondido area etc. Have you looked at hunting in either of these areas( not sure what the deer population #s are like there now) ? I used to see quite a lot of deer in the rural areas around Escondido and in the Camp Marston and Raintree Ranch area in Julian( they used to make themselves right at home and became quite the pests around our pasture and stables).
As stated before if the deer #s are not there then you really dont need to worry about what kind of broadhead you are using, rather focus on and put this energy into locating where the deer #s are etc.
I wish you good luck and hope you find a new area that has the #s to suppot your hunting.

I agree with Arthur with a little more practice ant tuning you could make killing shots with fixed heads just as well as mechanicals
