"Forget the wind.....Just hunt"
#41
I will in fact not know the stand I will be hunting come the opener.
At this point.. I really don't even know the land I will be on.
I will take all variables into consideration as the date approaches.. much scouting still to do.
Wind for myself.. is final determining factor.

I have 3 farms that I hunt early season just for Doe's to fill the frezzer. I have other spots that I don't hunt til Late Oct and the first two weeks of Nov for the rut. Oh, to answer your ? yes I do know what stand I will be hunting in on the first day. I will be in my climber in a Doe honey hole.

I have several potential stand sites in mind based on crop rotation and past experiences, but I won't compromise any of them by hunting an iffy wind; in fact, the wind will largely be the determining factor in which stand I sit in opening night.

The first morning, I will be heading out to on of the perminant stands on the property, no matter the wind. The first morning for me is much more tradition and being out with the boys than hunting. Most of these "boys" I speak of are more gun hunters with bows in their hands, they don't really care what direction the wind is blowing and up at the cabin, on that day, the deer don't really either. With all of the public land around all they know that there are lots of humans in the woods. It's a shame, but if I was 100% serious, 100% of the time, I probably wouldn't set foot on cabin land except during the week and even then the other spots I have gotten access to would take preference.
ps....don't let that rant fool ya...i am squirming to get in the woods in any capacity.

I know the exact stand I will be in on the first morning no matter what the wind. I have said it many times on here, where I hunt, the deer really don't care about human scent, they interact with humans on a daily basis and have grown acustom to the scent. These deer live is a small chunk of property with corn/alfalfa fields on one side, a airport on another side, a housing development, and a maximum security prison on the other, not to mention that there has been construction right beside the prison where the new county jail is going.
If I was hunting one of my other properties, it would all depend on what the weather was like in the morning.

Jeff I hear ya. I don't know where I will be yet, too much property to narrow it down right now and too early to tell, but if I find some serious stuff , Im in that area first morning no matter what. I will spray down and let her rip, if I see em, great, if I don't, hey, it's just the first day!

I went up there today and put another camera in hopes I catch him on camera. From what the guy said, its the biggest he has seen in 5-7 years. I think I will be on one of the three islands beside the plot. I think if you are coming up opening day, you need to be in between the plot and the bedding we walked through.
Down at the river its guarded on both sides from any wind, so Im not worried about any wind...I will be high enough anyway.
