Goodpost Greg, hopefully someone on this form that has not been seasoned or trained well will realize the importance of stand placement compared to wind direction and put it to good use.
I myself cant understand why anyone would stay in a stand if the wind shifted on me when the option of moving to another one exists.
Also not a big fan of scent killers if they are not natural ones, why pay for them when most places I hunt have Dirt and water to scrub my hands and boots with. Never was keen on squirting myself with a man made product after taking a shower.
I do use a UV killer and Baking Soda rinse on my clothes.

If I'd gotten down when the wind shifted.....he"might" still be walking.

My '07 8 pointer was shot on Novemebr 6th. Wind was PERFECT. Temp was cool. Before daylight the wind shifted and the clouds rolled in (I thought I was gonna get wet). I stood my ground.....and killed him at 7:05......coming from (for maybe the first time in my life) EXACTLY where I thought he'd come from.

I was clean. It worked out. He's on my wall. He came from downwind of me (downwind at that time). I can't explain it other than to say......I thought it was gonna work out. It did. I only know that if I'd climbed down when the wind shifted.....he'd have lived another day.

I'm not saying "I" have the "killer instinct". But I'm saying "something" told me to trust my spot (I'd seen him in that area on the previous Friday, Saturday). I killed him Tuesday morning.

The best tool we have is between our ears. If yours tells you to get down every time the wind shifts.......by all means do so

Never mind I missed it in your quote.[8D] I see it says November 6th. That time of year the bucks are about as dumb as they get and I'm guessing thats a big reason why he came in down wind of you. I've had the same thing happen numerous times as well during the rut being there heads are so far up there ass's during this time of year. Usually what saves a buck that time of year is the doe's nose there following or trailing, not theres. Any other time of year chances are that buck might never of came in. One will never know I guess.

The 2 the granddaughters are holding, the 9 on the back wall on the left and the7 (wifes rifle kill) on the right are all Oscoda county deer, But dont tell no one.
The one in the middle on the back wall isabout a 20 minute ridefrom where you hunt in Kentucky, the 2 on the left are from Kansas. There are 5 other mounts in the house from Kentucky you cant see in the picture not counting a 140 class 8 pt rack in the floor that needs to be remounted. 2 at the taxidermists (another KY redo and the wifes last year ML kill) I need to get when I figure out which liquor store to hit!

So for me, it is not all about the odds.
You're saying that deer hunting has little to do with playing the odds? Then what is it? Luck?

Why do you apply the knowledge from your past experiences? To put the odds in your favor? If it wasn't about odds, we'd all have an opportunity at a monster buck every year.

1) A lot of people say this isn't rocket science and you don't think that hunting the wind is scientific. Did you hear me say that it was?? How would you refer to the using the exact angles of wind prediction in order to select a stand site? When it comes to deer hunting, that's about as scientific as it gets. Obviously "hunting the wind" isn't that simple of a principle to you.

2) I would think that most people would but all one has to do is read GMMATs post on "Forget the wind, just hunt" to see that this is not what everyone would. So the answer is ....No. Touche, I should have used the term 'majority' rather than everyone. But there are still very few people who conciously hunt with bad wind. As you mentioned earlier, it's common sense.

3) The weather web site has been practically spot on for the areas that I hunt "up here". Excellent, is that a national web site?

I didn't imply that you were soley ( or remotely)responsible for Higgens departure. I must have imagined you bringing that up in a quoted reply to my post. My bad.

you may take your place at the end of the line. Haha, you'll have a better chance of getting your deer to, "give you a light" than that.

Finally, the things that I post on here are to help others get an idea that they can expound on and help to achieve their goals. These are the very things that have helped me achieve success in hunting mature bucks. I believe that it's working. Why pick it apart and say it's not very scientific? I never said it was. I apologize for "picking it apart" about not being scientific. It seems (and apparently I'm wrong) that you were insinuating that you do much more than simply "hunt the wind," as if there is a science to you strategy. I'm sure you've helped a lot of people on this website...

How successful have you been? Why not share some of your techniques? I'd be very interested to hear them, especially the scientific ones. Success is subjective, I consider myself fairly successful. Unfortunately I don't have any scientific techniques, I'm simple. I use the four cardinal directions, left or right, you know... the basic stuff, that's about it.
I'm still curious as to how many acres you hunt that you can have lots of different stands to hunt when the wind isn't in your favor. Personally, I have a couple of smaller parcels of land that I hunt normally and I have to move properties depending on the wind.
