When a crop is ready to be harvested, they cut it.Crops are a farmer's lifeblood and you can't expect them to put it off over some casualties.Thousands of deer and turkeys have been killed by bailers, combines, etc since farming became mechanized and it really hasn't done anything to the populations.Look at the major agriculture states and what their deer and turkey pop's. are.More deer are probably killed on the roadways than in the farmer's fields

Cut it early, It may not be ready.

Cut it late, you may not have enough time for it to grow to make another cut.
So 7-14 days sooner or later is that much difference?

BTW, I understand a farmer that has crops in must harvest, BUT I'm mainly talking about the small-time cattle farmers that have 20-50 acres of hay and a few dozen head of cattle.

What about the flush bar?

Having cut my share of hay, I can attest that he would prevent it if he could. A fawn does not do the swather any good and can cause damage and certainly dulls the blades.

As far as timing of when they cut, that has already been covered. As the saying goes, "Make hay when the sun is shining".

As far as a flusher bar.......would create more problems than it would eliminate.

While there are exceptions to everything, as a general rule, your statement couldn't be farther from the truth. There are no BETTER conservationist and environmentalists that farmers and ranchers who depend on the land for their livelihood.

They depend on the land for their crops, Im sure a farmer, would be perfectly sastified if he went one year without crop damage due to deer.I think thats what he was getting at.

Environmentalist I'll give you,but around my parts I disagree on the conservation.A farmer depends on his land for himself and his livelyhood.I'm not lumping all farmers together here just the ones I know. They want the numbers reduced significantly. It's not only deer, turkeys, coon and even sandhill cranes.I know one that shot a crane he saw in his field. If they had their way I think they'd clear everything in site to grow more crops.

Can you elaborate please? i do believe you, but like I said I've never cut hay so I'm not up on the current "hay cutting" info.

In the long run? Yes
