just don't "enjoy" the act of killing. I think I'm not in the minority. I could be wrong.
Look at the poll .....76 % at the very least, like it .... most love it ....

I feel remorse with every animal I hunt and kill. I try my best to make sure I get a clean fast kill. It doesn't always work out that way.I guess when the remorse, (guilt) takes the fun out of it I will stop hunting.

have no feelings of regret......just don't "enjoy" the act of killing. I think I'm not in the minority. I could be wrong.
Take up golf GMMAT, the balls don't die. Sounds to me like you fight your own nature. Why? If you don't enjoy, excuse me love, to kill a deer, let it be. Doesn't make you less of an archer, or a man. Don't do what doesn't feel right. Sorry if it sounds like I'm preaching. Not my intent.

Maybe you missed the point or feel diferently I don t think after 30 years of bow hunting I am going rethink somthing that I live for maybe it is because I have killed so much in the buisness that I am in it has made me feel diferently than you I don t know.To me I feel the ppl that posted on here that they had mixed emotions are more well the guys I have more respect as hunters as uposed to saying I like to kill things.
C'mon blackfish. If you've killed so much, why would you do it for pleasure on a deer? You like it, that's why. No need for apology. Be proud. You're saying you have little respect for me because I love to wax deer? On a hunting forum? C'mon. Did I mention I'd take a bullit for my German Shepard? No kidding!

The kill is the climax, every thing else is foreplay. When I was young, it was mostly the climax that mattered, now that I am older, the foreplay is important.
I have had several seasons of foreplay now and will climax in Kansas this fall.
Look out kansas, here I come!

What? GMMAT, please tell me I missed something. You frickin' hunt deer, but don't enjoy killing them? Am I missing something? Why do you do it? Dude, I'm perplexed. What is the reason you carry a weapon into the woods to snuff out the life of another living creature? Points? Prestige? Notiriaty? Acceptance? Trophies? Apparently, it ain't to become one with nature. I feel sorry for you man. When people put some of the summer sausage I, or my best bud makes (his is better), on a Ritz cracker, and say, "wow, that's good". Then I tell them how it got there.

It's apart of hunting, trapping, pest contol, putting animals downand butchering. I've killed a lot of things over the years as I imagine a lot of you guys have too. The kill isn't a necessary evil to me... it is justa means to an end.

I voted "It's all part of the hunt....I like it"

I didn't vote the "I love it" because it's not what I enjoy the most. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the hunt and the kill, it's just I don't revel in the loss of life to the point that it's my driving force.

Good thread....get's you thinking.....

Valor....I don't need for you to understand how I'm wired. I just don't enjoy killing.

I understand it to be (even a vital) "a" part of what we do as hunters. I'm fine with it. Doesn't mean I "enjoy" it. I accept it. It is what it is.

RE: The Kill

I think a lot of folks confuse hunting, and shooting an animal, with killing it. The word "harvest" is thrown around so much, it's de-personalized the act of killing an animal.

I believe alot of folks hunt and shoot the animal, without ever really giving a thought about the fact that they've killed that animal. It was walking and breathing, I ran an arrow through it's lungs, now it's dead. I killed it.

The actual release of the arrow is an absolute rush, IMO. But the literal KILLING of the animal isn't. Let's not confuse the 2.

I think we agree on this, Mobow. I take it that a lot of folks use the words "like" and "love" interchangeably in this context. I've said a few times that I love the hunt and I love the kill, but I don't love "killing". In my mind, there's an enormous difference. To most people, a successful hunt will end (I won't say climax and get Magicman excited again) with a kill, but killing doesn't necessarily involve a hunt. You said the release of an arrow is an absolute rush. I agree, but don't you think the rush is just as significant or maybe even more significant when you see that arrow hit home and you know that "this ones down"? I think that explains the arm pumps, high fives, and grown men melting into a gellatinous blob of nerves and emotions after the shot... even when it's seasoned pros on camera.

If thats the case, then hunt with arrows with suction cups on the tip ... or use one of those things that will throw a paint ball at the animal ......

Bottom .line .... you KILL the animal, jump up and down, hoot and holler, then grab those nasty horns and take a picture and pass it all over the net and to family ...... prolly drive it around, stopping at peeps houses ....... the kill part feeds our ego ... we have dominated the animal by taking it's life ... and we will make sure everyone knows about it ....

You and I view the taking of life......and hunting....much differently, Tony. That is obvious.

It's personal....and no one's view is wrong.

The accomplishment fulfills me. The act of killing the animal isn't even the d'enouemont. The success of the hunt (in totality) is.

I don't think we are that far apart .... now if you start hunting with a paint ball, which will fill all of your qualifications of the hunt and relieve you of the killing part, then I would say we are on oposite ends of the spectrum ......

GMMAT,
Would you be willing to expound on that last statement? I'm not saying you're wrong.... you're right in saying that it's different for all of us. It's difficult for me to understand how you can have a successful hunt without it ending with a kill. I know that any hunt can bean enjoyable experience, but it seems to me thatan actual "hunt" isn't succesful until the quarry is captured or killed.

One other thing.... what in the world does "d'enouemont" mean? I tried to look it up, but got no match at all on the web. What is it? A crowning achievement, sort of?

GMMAT 05-05-2008 06:59 AM

RE: The Kill

Sorry, LC...

It's a different way of saying that the "kill" (to me) is not the "crescendo"/"climax" of the successful hunt. The success of the hunt is at the end...when I can reflect back on the total experience.....in totality.

I happen to agree with you that a truly "successful" hunt ends with an animal being killed. It's not a particularly popular view, to many,.....but I agree with it.

quid pro quo ......:Danswer me first .... what aspect is miissing in hunting with a paintball for you????

Sorry, PT...missed this...

You seem to think I don't understand an animal HAS to die for me to be a "successful" hunter. I'm fully aware of that. I accept it. I don't lose sleep over it. But for me to say that I "enjoy killing".....wouldn't be truthful.

Have any of you ever held a loved dog (pet) while it was killed? Did you enjoy that kill?

I kill my chickens to eat them. I don't enjoy killing them but I can't eat them unless I kill them.

I kill deer to eat them. You can't eat something unless you kill it. Does that mean you have enjoy the killing part? Or isthe killingjust necessary so that you can eat them?

If I shoot deer with a paintball they won't die and I can't eat them ;).
