last muzzleloader season i found a doe during a deer drive that had holed herself up a brair thicket on a stream. she had two brokenback-legs sticking out maybe a broken hip it seemed really limp. i had smelled her first for the infection. i shot her and left her in a pine thicket. she was a big bodied doe who's every rib and bonewas sticking out, i guess she had been lying there for most likely week or so, just drinking from the stream

anyone who has a problem with you doing something like that is probably someone looking for something to get upset about (seems like there are a lot of them out there...) I would of done exactly what you did and I would of been happy that I was able to ease the animal's passing. There are many cases where ethics/morality and the law don't exactly line up and in such cases bending the rules to do the right thing is perfectly ok with me.

twildasin, if you're having twinges of guilt for what you did, imagine the guilt you would be feeling if you hadn't done what you did. Thank you for doing the right thing. A few years ago I came across a small group of deer while still hunting through some thickets. I noticed a fawn trying to keep up with the group. It's back right leg was broken anditspun like a pinwheel when it tried move fast. Tore my heart up. I tried to get close enough but kept losingit in the brush. If Ihada firearm instead of my bow it would have endedbetter. Ken

Too many, lots of car vs deer, and jaws missing. It is very sad seeing anything suffer!

No doubt in my mind you did the right thing! If you don't want anyone to know some thing you don't tell anyone. It was between you and your conscience and no one else.

What is upsetting is there isn't a more defined set of rules for putting down animals that are mortally wounded. I know that some game wardens around here would have a field day with this. We had one in Dekalb County that cited a guy for baiting because he ate an apple and threw the remains on the ground so I can only imagine.[:@]
