I was just wondering about the "age and experience" part. I was wondering about that statement and how/if it applied to the question in the thread.

Absolutely. some of us won't shoot anything but a nice buck, some of us will shoot any buck, some of us will shoot anything... but all of us started out shooting just about anything our first few years.

ok, some guys won't shoot anything but a buck for the wall, trophy hunters, mature buck hunters, whatever you call em, this staus most of the time comes with many years of hunting. There are 5 stages to hunting, anyone who has hunted long enough, knows these 5 stages.
1. shoota deer 2. shoot lots of deerIf 3. shoot a buck 4. shoot a mature buck 5. don't care if you shoot at all b/c you are satisfied with what you have taken. If you ask a guy who has lots experience and some age if he would kill a fawn, he may say no because he has reached a certain stage in his career. |

va, i see what your saying and how it relates to the thread. really before i killed my 4th deer, any deer i saw was down, doe fawn, button buck, you get the picture. after my 4th though, i realized that i was blessed with two spots, that i had a great chance every year to kill a wall hanger, so i started passing up deer. two years ago, i ate my buck tag, i killed a doe in early october, on a managed hunt, so it wasnt even a normal tag.

If you ask a guy who has lots experience and some age if he would kill a fawn, he may say no because he has reached a certain stage in his career. So let me ask......Whatshould an experienced hunter with several years experience do when he's faced with an overpopulation of does.....and a doe fawn 15yds broadside in front of him? |

I appreciate the clarification. I WISH I could hunt for that one or two good deer a year.....and I might just do that this year. That would be my preference. Last year was a lot of work.

A LOT of us ate well. That's another thing that bothers me. I donated 5 to a family, last year. I'd hate to think they'd miss that (if I didn't shoot a bunch). I think about that.

Unless your reasons are QDM I just don't see the difference. It would seem that in many areas you might even benifit the herd if the fawn is sporting spots too late in the season to be a good bet to winter thru. If it's legal and you want to shoot it go ahead.
It'slike some guys have got a Bambi thing going on.  I have in the past shot a deer that did not have spots but only required a little force to put into the fridge crisper drawer.I just hope none of you folks drive anymore carefully when the car in front of you has a "Baby on Board" sign than you would otherwise. |

I'm in the minority, I don't shoot doe fawns. Probably the biggest reason I haven't mistakenly shot a button buck in over 20 years.

A tag, which I always have plenty of, a clear shot, and the 100% knowledge it's a female. Easy drag too.

i've got a couple of reasons. first the amount of deer around my area is too high. I only shoot if i know that its a doe. and every year my family hosts a end of summer barbeque and we roast a40 lbpig and usually do a barbeque fawn(basically the same as a pig roast)

Well actually you came to mind Jeff on this question. if its piebald like the one you took a beating over a couple years ago, im shooting, or an albino fawn. Other option would be for meat. I have ate fawn before and it is the best venison i have had.

I'd take into account the deer population density in my area, and from what I have read that is what most of you are doing. Too many deer for the carrying capacity in the area.....nothing wrong with taking one plus good eating. Reason I don't is because the density in my area is probably what it should be and taking a mature doe is a challenge.

bigcountry I don't get what u say,what does being an expeirenced hunter have to do with killing a yearling.You sound as if you believe that anyone that kills anything less than a trophy is not a true hunter,I would have to disagree,we must kill does as well as bucks and there is no difference in killing a yearling doe than killing a mature one,other than personel preference.I shoot what I want to shoot when I want to shoot it as long as it is legal.With that said I killed 4 deer this year with one being a decent buck and 3 does 2 of which were yearlings.I passed on six different bucks and several does and yearlings as well.I did this because I wanted to kill some deer,but wanted kill more does than bucks.I have way to many does to bucks on my hunting property and that is the reason I killed only 1 buck so maybe the bucks would get older and bigger.I would have liked to have killed more does,but 3 is the legal limit,by the way our limit is 3 bucks also,not to many years ago I would have killed my 6 deer regardless of size,but now I would like a better class of bucks to choose from,but I have no problem with hunters that choose to kill whatever is legal in their hunting area and it just bugs me to hear someone try to down someone for doing just that.Hunting is something that is very personal for each hunter and we should support ech other regardless of our personal agenga out in the field.

We have had an earn-a-buck deer management program for the last 4-5 years here in my hunting unit here in Wisconsin. What this means is that if you want the opportunity to shoot a buck you must have killed an anterless deer. The tag is good for the season you shoot the deer in and the following season, so if you don't harvest a anterless deer in the season you can't take a poke at a buck.
That being said, in the first few years that this program was implemented, it wasn't that hard to get a non-fawn doe. But due to the large numbers of hunters (earn-a-buck carries over to gun hunting also, so if you want to shoot a buck during bow and gun you need to shoot two does) in the state, the doe population in our area has taken a large hit. I have yet to run into a situation where I have been unable to harvest a yearling doe (or older), but there have been a few situations (seasons) where if I was sure I was not shooting at a nubbin buck, I would shoot a doe fawn. |

I'd rather eat veal/filet mignon (which is about what doe fawn amounts to) than a strip or flank steak. I love venison anyway, but doe fawns are a gift from God for someone who hunts deer just because they are made out of meat. What I wouldn't do, is shoot a 2.5 or 3.5 year old buck... unless it was truely a giant (like the Hanson buck was/is). |

Not to mention, that depending on the time of year, (especially around the rut), if you see a smallish deer all by itself, you can hang your hat on the fact it'll be a button buck run off from its momma while she makes him a little brother or sister. Button bucks have short faces, round heads and short lower jaws.... and of course... buttons... which are usually fairly easy to see. My golden rule is never shoot a fawn if its all by itself... and I've never shot a button buck while bow hunting. |

If it was my first deer....Or a late doe hunt in the snow....when they are cute and fuzzy.....nothing like a plump young one on the smoker.....
Not to mention.....its good business to shoot a young doe in myworld...we like to keep our mature doe(s) at an even measure in order to give the dominant bucks a run for their money. When I see spikes and 4's running all the big doe(s) I know its time to review the doe herd... |

I did last season and I am in a earn a buck zone. Kill a doe/nub before you can shoot a buck.

Seriously though, if its a bigger doe fawn(usually meaning later, but some do get big quick) I will shoot her if its the only shot opp I have or think I will get at that particular time. They eat real fine, and I can butcher them much easier/quicker than a full size doe. Otherwise I generally wait on a bigger doe. |

I can't say that I've never killed a doe fawn and even a few buttons over the years. But now I will pass on all fawns, unless it is suffering with an injury of some kind or looks sick. I'm not that hard up for meat. I have no problem with other hunters who take them.
