RE: What would it take to make you kill a doe fawn?
I have to agree with him that hunting is personal, and that we cannot dictate our values to others. I hunted 46 times in 2006.....and saw 326 deer , from stand. Last year.....the numbers were down.....but in 48 sits I still saw 207 deer.....including 58 fawn sightings. Now....I could shoot every deer that walks by me......and in reality....a buck fawn will consume 2X the food a doe fawn does. I pick my battles. Hunt a season in my stand and tell me what you'd do. |

RE: What would it take to make you kill a doe fawn?
Jim.....by the time December rolls around, here......the BB's are a LOT bigger than their mothers. When Rob was here in '06.....I had a doe and two fawns enter my set.....and I almost drew down on the doe. Turns out.....the biggest one of the three was the fawn (BB).
Here.....they are WAY bigger than their female siblings in record time. In actuality....I "meant" to put 1.5X. My mistake (and I know the 1.5X to be true). And I dont understand why we're talking about when they're born. They're born in May.....and they're at least 4 mos. old by the time my season rolls in. I don't think I shot one this year until it was probably 5 months old. I asked a LOT of questions before I adopted this practice.......and did some soul searching. I can live with my choice. TO ME.....it would be selfish not to kill them. It's not like I'm killing all of them.....or shooting them with spots. I picked up 3 of them out of the ditch at the end of my driveway last year. Whee I took 'em to.....I suppose the yotes ate 'em. I got a nice 'Thank You' card from the widow across the street after Christmas......for the "wonderful" ham I gave her from one of those fawns. ;) |

I can't say for sure on your area or state but up here in Minnesota the fawns are popping out in June also.

If you have 2 deer come in here (late in the season).....and you shoot the biggest one.....chances are if it's a doe and a BB......you just shot the BB.

RE: What would it take to make you kill a doe fawn?
Round here the buck starts out bigger than a doe even while still an embyro and will be bigger all it's life. This explains why so many buttons are shot while the shooter thinks it's the mom to the smaller deer. As proof of the size difference I offer the following pic feom a doe I shot this year in late season. WARNING: The following pic is graphic of the embyo's that doe was carrying. If you wish not to see it don't scroll down. If someone still objects I will remove it or a mod can do so at his discretion.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The buck already has knobs for the antlers behind the ear knobs and overall already shows a size difference. |

Rickmur
I've never seen an embryo in real life or pictured before. Thats pretty wild looking. I know that had to suck to find that upon dressing your deer. How late in the season are we talking? |
