Germ, yes, the gun hunters are the key to population controll.

In Ky,early doe seasons are not necessary because we have liberal doe seasons anyway and plenty of early opportunities to take them with muzzleloaders and youth hunters with rifles.

I really feel Ky is a model example of how to manage deer herds,NOT PERFECT but from some of the stuff I read on here and other places,MUCH CLOSER to getting it right than most.
I agree KY is the model to follow, I would just like to see their gun start after the 20th of NOV. I would followthree states right now.

Iowa
Kentucky
Ohio
Won't happen because we are not controlling the population enough as is,move the season back, then fewer deer will be killed. That is as simple as it gets.

Rut is the best time to kill both bucks and does.

I love to hunt with my bow more than my gun but let me set the record straight. We are on the same side here both gun and bow hunters! Yes, I know it makes hunting with your bow more difficult if there are guns sounding off around you but would they have just as much right to be out there as we do. Example: here were I live (Texas) we can hunt a monthsooner than the gun hunters. I guess weshould let the guns come first and spook them beforewe get a chance? I like it the way it is. I understand your argument but this fighting among ourselves is fruitless. As the old saying goes"the grass is always greener onthe other side"problem is is there is no right sideand anywhich way you look at itthere will be unhappy people. "You can please someof the people some of the time but not all of the people all of thetime."

I have hunted with gun hunters since I picked a bow back in 1984 before, during and after the rutso there is not much I can be toldor probably have not already encounterd. I could go on and on but I know that there aredifferent circumstances for some of the other members in other states that I might not be aware of.In closingI will say this ifthings continue theyway they are in this country wemay find ourself fighting for our right to even own a weapon solets notcut each othersthroat...We should be on the same side!!!

We get two weeks of bow, then it's whatever you choose to use. Not to try to de-rail the thread, but I don't care if you take twelve guns into the woods, just leave the dogs at home.

Hunters are a management tool for the Fish and Game departments. Bow hunters will never kill enough deer to obtain their goals. The majority of hunters are gun hunters and many of them are as serious as any bow hunter.

In NY bowhunters get to hunt pre rut the rut and post rut. You can hunt with a bow during gun season.

Careful about waking the sleeping giant. Gun hunters provide a huge amount of money, they we all need.

I hunt with bow a bow and a shotgun.

You want trophy bucks educate people about letting them grow. Don't mandate AR's etc. People will come around.

TFOX I do not know KY numbers, but in MI we kill enough deer just not the right ones;)

CP I agree 100%, but the DNR needs to setup tags systems that help them reach their goals. They average "Proto" hunter is not going to be "educated" in hunting a certain way IMO.

It's not about rifle vs bow, its a debate on management. Most feel that having a rifle season during the rut allows for too many bucks to be killed. Bow seasons aren't as effective on a widespread basis at controlling deer numbers as gun seasons are. So yes, in my opinions gun seasons should be kept out of the rut, not because I don;t like guns, but becuase I like to allow bucks to grow older.

the response that rifle season is a slaughter is laughable. I enjoy bowhunting much more than rifle season but if you call rifle season a slaughter I invite you to try in Maine. Rut or no rut, the success rate is 20% of licensed hunters tag a deerand our rifle seasons runs for 4 weeks from the very end of October thru thanksgiving. The reason I bowhunt is like one person mentioned to expand my time in the field, and I happen to have fell head over heels for bowhunting, but I have no problem sharing the woods for the 4 week rifle season, I have 4 weeks prior to rifle season to own the woods.
I've heard that from more than one Maine hunter. You guys have it rough up there. You guys season should be all year just to give ya a chance.:D
