I think THAT GUY would be, Rob.

Would "I"?[8D]
No,he was a pro shooter with near perfect form but that doesn't show the lack of forgiveness.

RJ,I agree with you about drop aways attached to the downcablebut they can be tuned very effectively without affecting the creep tune in a major way.I have seen the results when checked on a shooting machine with a trophy taker, they are fine rest.

I even saw one pro use a spring steel attached to a Muzzy at an ASA shoot, quess you could say he was trying to get the best of both worlds,I actually shot with him.

If I have something on my bow for hunting that I am afraid will not perform, said item is discarded for something that I can prove/and trust. I guess what I am trying to say is, I would want no less on a bow I was shooting for 3D.
The misnomer being......that I'm not 100% trustful in my hunting accessories. I am.

The difference is.....I NEED the full arrow containment on my hunting rig (or, at least....it's a want I have). Also...if something goes awry with my hunting setup....I can get it adjusted in a manner of probably an hour. if something happens when I'm away at a 3D shoot...I want it to be something simple enough that I can take care of it.

Nothing wrong with shooting 3D with your exact hunting rig. I just don't know too many people who do that......that are competitive. I'm betting the guy who shot 216 on the same course I shot 198 on Saturday.....wasn't shooting his hunting rig

Believe it or not my preferred 3D rest right now is one that is used by many for hunting and seems to be looked down upon by the 3D crowd.
Muzzy Zero Effect.

I'll explain why I am using it.

It is driven away without the use of spring tension, or even cords that can stretch (ala the Limb Driver). There are no internal springs, pins, linkages etc and no connection to the cables for activation, therefore it is extremely consistent shot to shot. The groups I am shooting with it out to 50 yards are as good as I can shoot. I had an honest 5 shot group the other day where all 5 arrows were TOUCHING in the x ring at 43yds like they were bundled with a rubber band.
Even if it's just mental I DO believe or "Feel" that a consistent drop away rest is more forgiving to poorly executed shots. I've shot Bodoodles, and Spring steels etc and it definitely seemed like a bad shot was worse with the extended contact these rest made with the arrow.
I am getting perfect arrow flight and zero contact with the fletching

The launcher arm is rigid, and since I am not seeing any wear to the plastic yet even after hundreds and hundreds of shots the launch pt stays consitent. (I will keep an eye on this one because it ISN'T metal and can wear down a bit I'm sure over time)

Here's one benefit I am appreciating as well, especially in the cold and wind. When i was using my $150 Golden Key Infinity drop way with the Dave Cousins .010 launcher , it FELT very "Targety" but I found myself messing up my shot progression on quite a number of shots because outside I would bounce the arrow off the blade, the wind would blow it off on a good gust and would have to vary the way I drew the bow and really concentrate on keeping the arrow in place, having to draw several times on certain targets.
This can REALLY mess up your concentration and shot progression. Trust me after you've had to draw your bow 3 times in front of 3 guys at IBO Worlds, your not only getting tired but embarassed and frustrated. The tendency is to then rush the shot.

The Zero Effect allows me to simply stand at the stake on any slope or angle in any weather, and set my breathing and draw the same on EVERY SINGLE SHOT. I don't have to even consider my arrow in relation to the rest. I can focus from the start of draw until I shoot only on the spot I want to hit.
This has been a BIG plus for this season so far.

And when I say season I am 5 shoots into a 15 week league which will transition into state and national competition.
I wasn't expecting to say this, but the Zero Effect thus far has been the best 3D rest I've used.

OK, Matt...I trust your judgement.

Is there only one model of this rest? Can you get me a link?

Thanks.

The rest needs to guide the arrow as long as possible to be forgiving ,that is untill the string no longer has contact, then you don't want the rest to be in contact.
Ok....but.....In the case of a nondrop away rest, isn't the arrow in contact w/ the rest after it leaves the string, and not so w/ a drop away?
I referred to this as being soft in germs thread the other day.The prong rest is stiff and allows for little to no contact.RJ pointed out what Cousins did with the cock vane down on a spring steel.Do you think that would be possible to have that much contact with a prong rest and still be accurate? On a prong style,as long as you have the same contact from arrow to arrow, you should be able to repeat somewhat but forgiveness would be out the window.

BUT,the prong rest does give more guidance than a fallaway but it has limitations for clearance.

Watch how the arrow starts to float a little on the prong rest, this is why I don't like a WB,it restricts this from happening.

A spring steel will still be catching the arrow and guiding it,the prong does to,a drop away is out of the picture at this point in most instances.Usually by the time the arrow releases from the string, the arrow is floating above the rest. Not an absolute though.

This is getting into the smallest of details,I can say from experience when I was shooting a deflex bow with a spring steel, the forgiveness was unbelievable.I made shots that I knew was less than perfect but they hit the middle at distance.More than once I said to myself, how did that happen?

Jeff, what bow you putting that on. The Muzzy won't go on your 82nd but will on your Ally. If I were you, I'd set your Ally up for 3D, easier to slow down and the Muzzy will fit and use your 82nd for hunting, unless you already thought of that.

And I see you don't trust my judgement, via PM. [&:]

The most reliable, easiest, cheapest, and accurate rest ever, was the springy. Getting hard to find now but I know a small shop out in the country that still has some. PM me if you want to try one Jeff, they cost about 10.00.

You guys are too techincal fo rme.

If you tell me which one I need for my 82nd, rob.....hell I'll just buy IT.

And to be honest....I don't think I can get my Ally to 285fps, easily, either. It's shooting 310fps, right now @ 64#'s.

I believe I shot with a guy that won the open B classat an ASA national shoot that was using one of those.Do you have a picture? His bow was an older model that he used for field and for some reason,he had to use it for the 3-d shoot and he won.

Great post Matt!

cords that can stretch (ala the Limb Driver).

I don't like this statement though. I NEVER have had my cord stretch to that extent. Not to mention if it does, you loosen a set screw, pull it tight, and tighten it back down. Takes 15secs.
