Are scopes on compounds legal for hunting?
Maybe not legalin a few states, but I don't know of any. At least for the most part, the answer is YES. So are red dot sights.

I'm not concerned in the least around a cocked crossbow. It'll just lay there quite content and not do anything at all... unless some idiot starts messing with it.

I have seen crossbows cocked for a long time and no problems. There is or should be no problem from a properly handled cocked crossbow. Just the same as any other weapon. If people are pointing any weapon at or near another person, I think that you need to worry more about that person then the weapon.
