What I dont understand about the Pope and Young club is why you have to wait 60 days for drying? To me this makes no sense at all. You have to wait 2 months for a dead animal to be officially scored? I just dont get it......does anyone?

Of course, after 60 days the antlers/skull is dry to a point of shrinkage where it won't change anymore. If they did a green score and placed it in the books, then over 60 days later someone contested it, the measurement would have changed due to drying and shrinking. No one could say for sure if the previous measurement was legit. After a 60 day drying period, it is what it is.

If it's scored by an official P&Y scorer....who could say anything ANYWAY? What's the use in having it scored by an official scorer if it can be contested?

What's the purpose of contesting a court of law? Happens all the time though.

I think it's just to keep things at an "even playing field"....if there were such a thing. Rob is right though....It's fact that after 60 days the antlers will no longer shrink. If everyone has to score after that period, it's even. What if someone measured theirs 2 days after killing it, and it was, lets say.....127 inches... ( ) and goes in the P&Y book. Another guy score his at 63 days and comes up with 127 inches...that first guys buck is now lets say 124 4/8......misses book.....

Just a form of control to keep it even....

I know this has been brought up in the past, but has anyone ever green scored their rack, or had it scored, then rescore it again 60 days later? How much do they actually shrink? Am i safe in assuming that the reason the shrink is from the loss of moisture in the bone? If so, couldnt you put the rack in a freezer for 60 days, then thaw it out and score it and it should have shrunk at all? Just some thoughts i have on it.

After more thought.....I'm betting this rule is in place for people who hunt remotely.....so that their animals are not handicapped because they can't get them to an official scorer, immediately.

That would make sense.
