For me, its anything BUT fawns. I had an experience with a young 6 month old fawn, barely had the spots off that got hit by a car. Both front legs were broken when we got there and one shoulder was shattered. Needless to say, putting it out of its misery with a knife wasnt the most enjoyable thing ive ever done. Meat was real tasty, but it was a tough thing to do. Before that i would shoot a fawn if i got the chance, but with starting bowhunting this year and continuing shotgun hunting, i cant bring myself to do it anymore.

I like em Big! Killed my first bow buck in 67 also, 50 # Kodiak, plad shirt, blue jeans, leather boots, and my tree stand was the second limb up of a large oak. Started passing on young bucks in the late 70's when I figured out I would never kill a big one if I kept filling my tag with little ones! Killed my first P&Y buck in 83. Just not as successful at it since I moved back to this state and thats my story and I am sticking to it!! I get more enjoyment out of watching young bucks than I do shooting one, I do not have a need for a kill to have a good hunt and belive me I have took a ribbing for it these last few years from family and friends for being buckless at the end of the year.
I wont shoot a Doe since the 2.00 kill all you can, Great NorthernMichigan Deer Massacre.

It honestly depends on where I am hunting. I mosty hunt public land where a 2.5 year old eight pointer is a good buck. This is because until this year you could not kill a doe during rifle season...It was Bucks only, and most of the decent bucks are taken out then by the orange army. I am working my tail off to cover a lot of the land to find where the big ones are and have an idea but just havent found one yet.
Now if I am hunting my uncles father-in-law's property(where i gun hunt) I am strictly mature 3.5 and older buck hunting and some doe managment.

This is a great question.......
I'm somewhere between number one and number two.
Some years I'm after a mature buck only and others I leave it up to how I feel at the time the shot presents itself. I think people should shoot what they want, after all this is supposed to be fun.
It's been a while since I killed anything smaller than an 8-point buck as it's kinda been my standard to meet for a while now. This however does not stop me from killing a young 8 point. Perfect example was the buck I killed this year, a 2.5 year old (best guess) 8-point.
Now with another buck tag to fill, I'm after a mature buck only. In fact I've already passed on a buck that was very similar to the one I killed this year (100in +/-)the thought to shoot him never even crossed my mind.

Iswitched from"brown its down" tohunting mature bucks aboutfive years ago. Since then, my hunting experiences have been 100% more enjoyable. I enjoy watching immature bucks and does passme byin their natural state, this enables me to learn more about my quarry as well. Mature bucks are harder to hunt....therefore i spend more time in the woods in order to chase them and put the odds in my favor and i see more action. I have had some of my best hunts without even seeing a mature deer and went home empty handed. I just love the thrill of the challenge! Since focusing on big bucks, I have since taken four pope and young bucks and my biggest was taken this year, a 160" gross 11 pointer, can't wait to top him!

Well Greg, I didn't see an option for me. It could have been there but I mayhave read to much into it. I would like to think I'm a mature buck hunter but if it's getting late in the season I may have to take what walks under my stand. This year I have yet to put one on the ground. If it gets to be 01 Jan and I still haven't filled the freezer then I might have to take what I'm offered.

My idea of a shooter buck is a90 inch type of deer. Just the ones that would be corkers next year if I had the self control which even after 30 years I don't.
I won't shoot a BB, spike or fork but if I then shoot a young 8pt I may as well had shot him when he was a spike cause he is still never going to mature..
Believe it or not there are guys who hunt hard all season but are lucky to seea doe or two andsomething with ANY bone on his head make him very desirable.
Generally when people tell me they are strickly trophy hunters I think they are full of it but if I look at the contest score pics they truly reflect selective hunters for the most part which is impressive but probably not typical of the average Joe..
