I will take the first doe or two under my stand for the freezer. Then it mature bucks only. I own a small farm so I set the rules for the friends that hunt here. Does or old bucks only. If you take a 2-3 year old buckit will be the last from my farm unless it is injured or has bad genitics. Some of my friends kids hunt here but for there first deer the rules go out the window. I want to see big bucks but the smile of a 10 year old with his first "trophy" is just more important. My son took his first deer at 9 and I am more proud of that little doe than any I have ever or will ever kill.

Um you forgot an option for usmanagement mined folks !!
See the top option!!
I think by management he means managing for total numbers regardless of age structure............not QDM
I'm not sure what his herd is like, but from all of the places I hunt and most I hear or read about it seems that the does could stand to be thinned a bit. If this is the case the top option would still work. No?

Well since he didn't respond....................I see that droptine is from new Jersey and i assume when he is talking about management hunting he is talking about taking large deer numbers regardless of sex or age structure to bring numbers down any way possible. This is used mostly in suburban areas where numbers are too high for the habitat to support, so actually it would fall under the brown it's down catagory.................If this is wrong please correct me.

In 3 years of bowhunting I have been a brown its down guy. In the first year I killed a doe, last year I killed my first 2 bucks, both small. this year I have killed 2 bucks that are better than last years 2. I would like to become a mature buck hunter and kill does for meat. That may not happen soon. I may put in a few years as an opportunist first.

Where I hunt I don't see any choice but to be an opportunist..........sure you hope to see a nice one come out but you must also be realistic about your goals. I worked ultra hard and had more then my share of good fortune this season in NY...........I couldn't be happier with the way it went but I am also experienced enough around here to know not to set unrealistic goals.

I've been EXTREMELY fortunate in my 2+ years bowhunting. I've taken a 3.5yr old and a 4.5 yr old buck. I still think I'm an opportunist....but I also feel like I must be doing something right, too. I'd LOVE to concentrate my efforts on just hunting mature bucks. The herd dynamics here won't allow that. I have to thin does....and doing so on the small parcels I hunt will likely thwart some mature bucks from this area (my intrusion).

From stand.....I've seen 2 mature bucks in my hunting area. They will both be on my wall by next Summer.

We'll see what the future holds.

IL has me hunting mature bucks and does for meat. Back home in the U.P. there is so much pressure that getting old is tough to do. At our camp, we shoot bucks if they have 8 points or better and then usually a doe or two for meat.
