They are not "pet" deer exactly, but they are not exactly wild either. They are not fenced in. We're in a subdivision with lots of brush covered vacant lots, and no one has enough land to hunt (you must have 10 acres to hunt in Texas).
However, about 1/2 mile away the ranches start, and they are hunted. People that say feeding the deer makes them easier to kill probably haven't been around fed deer that much. These same deer that walk up next to me here by the house will not let me come anywhere near them when I'm on one of the ranches, they won't even stay in sight. So it may make them a little easier to hunt, but certainly not much. If we hunted them close by, it would definitely make them easier to harvest, but we can't because it's illegal.
However, they have better meat and are healthier, which is what we want.

I was able to get pretty close to a few bucks this morning, one is ready for the rut to start, has that red around the eyes and getting jumpy. My wife took a video, you can see the herd looks good this year, all that rain really helped.
