Knife "idea".....whatcha think?

jeff, itll work great for gutting...out of the group of flintlock and rifle hunters only me and 1 otehr guy do the gutting. the drive leader says everyone else is too slow and burns daylight so he usually just does them..unless im around then i will if he isnt there first. heck most the guys dont know how because they only hunt with us and never had to. but hes the only person ive seen that is faster than me...he uses a razor knife that has the snapoff blades...or someones knife that has a sharp one. but usually the razor knife. zip, cut cut and your done. i hate when guys that make a 5 minute or less job into surgery...
i got a good Case knife dad gave me when i turned 12...best knife blade ive seen. i find i can gut 3-4 deer before its not very sharp...hold an edge nicely. heck ive gutted deer with all kinds of knives...my benchmade pocket knife...my leathermen wave...anything will work so long as its sharp...i cant stand a dull blade...

They suck Jeff. Get a real knife with a good blade. D2 steel is my new favorite. It holds an edge good and sharpens up real easy. I'm kind of a knife freak; I carry three while hunting, so no worries about them getting dull...

You are right though, they hold a great edge.
The box cutter idea may work but cleaning them might really get to be a pain and you really need to watch the sharp pointswhen they break off.Would hate to bite into one of them some day.

2 falls ago I went to help a buddy gut his first deer.... One of these kniveswas all he had and I didn't bring one along with me.... it wasn't a treat to use... Cutting the wind pipe was a chore with that short blade.... Also, cutting around the anus was a pain and I could not split the pelvis with it.
Also, the part of the knife that you swing out of the way to replace the blades accumulated a lot of fatty grease. I guess he had a chore cleaning the knife.
I would not ever want to use one for gutting purposes again.

You guys are bumming me out......[:-]
I thought I had a "winner", here. Seriously??? Not even one deer? The one I bought looks like a pocket knife.....with about a 3" replaceable blade.

Never used one hunting because I just don't think the blades are long enough for guttin and I like a cool blade.
Might be tough to clean as well. They are more than sharp enough. I have hospital bills to prove it.

Hey Tex, try a gut hook style blade on the hog hide, you'll love it. I make my own out of old bandsaw blades from a sawmill. I put a hook on both sides of the knife so if one gets dull you can flip it over and have another sharp one. I sharpen them with a chainsaw file.

not sure how a thin blade would work on deer, might be a little flimsy.... Also since its so short you'll be keeping your fingers real close to the sharp point edge...
Try it and let us know, im sure it will be ok, just different!
Who knows you might be onto something
