Default RE: up the standards??

i know its all about ME. i made that pretty clear...

the first legal buck to come by and gimme a good shot will make my season. first day first light i will still be grinnin next year...

but...if i hunt the areas right, theres a always that chance that little legal buck will gimme a shot later on...after ive hunted the area a couple times and seen a couple other deer...i dont know...is public land and anything can happen...

i just feel the areas have potental to hold good bucks...even a 80lb doe will make me happy. i enjoy hunting for alot more than the kill...but the kill is icing on the cake and a nice rack will be the cherries ontop of the cake...

lets just hope the first buck to gimme a shot is a goodun

either way...even if its a small legal buck and i DO let the air out of him...i will be pumped

anyone that knows me knows some of my best hunts are the ones i came home with tag soup...im just that kinda guy...i get a kick outta watchin squirrels chase eachother...seeign that rare bird or whatever else the hunt brings...

im not a trophy hunter...but i will admit...i rather have big antlers than small ones but, small ones still make me happy. any kill with the bow will definently make ME happy...

i dont CARE what anyone thinks or says...if i wanna let the air out of a speckled fawn im going to. and im gunna post pics and brag all season...

Exactly mauser06, and you'll know it when he stands in front of you. Just tell yourself, no regrets.

Like everyone else has said. It's what makes YOU happy. My first bow buck was a lil 3 point. I wouldn't kill him today, but if I had to do it over I would. It feels really good to get that first one under your belt and you'll be able to be more selective later on.

You only have to make one person happy. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I've passed deer 4 or 5 tims only to decide some day..."You're going to die today". And you say it's all about the horns. For me it's not... it really isn't. Oh I pass up a lot of small buck because I want to see what shows up later or tomorrow or next week. I don't measure horns or mount deer anymore. I just hunt for me. It's suppose to be fun. If it's not, you're doing something wrong. Not wrong by my rules but wrong by your own. If someone says he isn't shooting anything less than Pope and Young he can't really complain about a bust season. He set his goals and didin't achieve them. It's not the hunting God's that did him in.. it was his own standards. Aim to succeed no matter the path you choose.
That's gospel right there, boys.

Mauser......ONLY thing I'd caution you on is this.....

When I "passed" on several small-ish bucks....waiting for the "one".....and that "one" came along.....I was in NO mental shape to take him. I NOW wish I had taken "a" deer with my bow to gain the confidence it takes to follow through with a plan. Believe me, Cap'n......confidence (having it) is HUGE!

"I" won't tell "you" what you should do......but.....if you have a doe tag....and an opportunity....play the scneario out in your mind like it's "your" buck.....and "maybe" get that much needed confidence under your belt. It doesn't even need to be in the area you're hunting these dandies......but the confidence gained by ensuring to yourself that you can follow through on everything that has to happen.....can aid you a LOT.

Just my .02, buddy. You'll know when it's right.....and you'll come through for YOURSELF.

good luck!

You know, the thing to think about when it comes to shooting something the first day because you would shoot it the last day is that deer season is long. If you were on a week long hunt then I am with you 100%, but the season is months long and so you can afford to be more picky for the first parts of the season, at least through the rut. What trumps everything though is what YOU want to do. This is a fun hobby, keep it that way!!!!
