Just to respond to that... They WOULD have destroyed hunting if they'd been taking does in the mid-50's. We only have the deer numbers we do now because does were NOT hunted for many years. Deer were nearly extinct after the end of the Great Depression and it took a long, long time for them to make a comeback. Now there are more deer than ever before, they are running out of habitat and it is desireable to take does.
Or regions
My grampa used to see 100 deer a day while hunting in Northen MI after the depression, and 2 of them were bucks

Beyond that, it's all aesthetics and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you insist on telling me what deer I can shoot, let me pick out your next wife for you. How's that?
Once again not one menttion of "Shoot this one"

You have asked one heck of a question the way I see it. I have to think about the big picture and not just the one in front of me.

1.) How is the deer herd doing as well as the population of them. If I saw to bucks together one could assume the herd is doing good. So to really answer this it is more about the geological location. In most cases I would wait for the big buck..

2.) When you look at the geological location, do you have a large winter kill from storms or predators? We have had some very large winter kills in this area which would have to be considered. Older and larger bucks have wintered out a many storms and predators. So in this case I would rather shoot the younger buck to allow the older one to breed and lead the herd to safety during the winter months.

3.) Now up in this area the herd has enjoyed the last to winters which has been milder than normal. So with that said it is time to let the young one grow and shoot the larger buck..

4.) With all things concidered I shoot for the larger body size deer for the most part though a large rack mounted deer would be nice. Here being the fact of shooting 1 deer per year I preffer the steak over the antlers..

5.) What is the amount of young deer in the herd it is a healthy size herd with a lot of young deer?
