Default Last night's storms......

Last night's storms had me thinking of.........

........how the deer and their newborns were handling the drenching. I got to thinking about the life of a deer, in general. Although I live in a state that's not too harsh of an environment.......nature's still tough on these animals.

Being a deer can't be too peachy of an existence. Nature is NOT kind.

I always think about mosquitoes.

When you kill a deer in the early season, by the time you get to the body it is literally covered in hundreds of mosquitoes. I don't know how they cope with that without a Thermacell or even a horse-like tail.

Then there's bobcats and coyotes. I don't think rain is high on their list of concerns (unless it absolutely floods).

You're right, but I think if I were a deer and I still had higher reasoning capacity, nature wouldn't be at the very top of my concerns list. That spot would be reserved for folks like us.
BTW, I'm jealous of the fact that you got rain. I've only had one real rain since the beginning of spring. We're dying here. I wonder how the local herds handle that?

They get wet and they know where to go

Remember the Tsunami? The animals ran and we just stood there[:-]

Just wonderin if part of the reason you hear about deer bedding in swamps during early season is if they are submerged in water they can keep the bugs off (and keep cool while doing it).

I went on a disaster June trip to the Buffalo river (pre Thermacell) and we got eaten alive by seemingly every bug on the planet (chiggers, ticks, mosquitoes, flies, gnats). We had to stay in the river to keep sane. Heck, even in the water, the horseflies were circling your head or waiting for you to come up.

They are good at it. One night in the middle of a drenching rain, lightning everywhere, 50 mile an hour winds I went to see if my horses where in the stalls. I could see them out grazing when lightning would light up the night... I guess that's why they are called animals.
