I think that there is some merit to what Arthur has said, in that it is human nature to want to center the pin and that a lot of people probably do it subconsiously after centering the guard. I shoot pins for 3D (for the rest of this year anyhow) but also shoot a scope/lens/black ring forfield and fita so I do have experience with both. I use the ring on my scope lens combo because it is human nature to line things up, I can just stare at the x ring through that black ring and make a strong shot and it just goes there if I have executed a strong shot. I don't have to even look at the edges of the black ring, just stare at the X and it goes there.

With that said,for using a pin sight I still believe that centering the pin guard through the entire aiming/execution phases of the shot routine is the best way to buildthe mostrepeatable shot.It is definitely not human nature to do this though (at least not for me). Ihad to doa lot of work with my coach specificallyto become proficient enough doing thisto be competitive with a pin sight.This is still one of the important steps in the aiming drills I do as part of every practice session to this day. Because of this I have built it into my shot routine to consiously center the pin guard(and check for a level bubble) just after reaching anchor, and as part of myaiming/execution sequence Isubconsiously watch it through peripheral (spell?) vision. Even though my conscious focus at this point in the shot routine is on the X ring, I subconsciously know if I am centered because of that ring of light (my peep is sized the same as Matt/PA's) and I also know if the bubble is level. If anything gets out of wack with the scope housing/peep or bubble I let down and start over. It's too late in the game at that point to recover, fix it, and still get a shot off in the small window of time I have for a perfect shot.

It is not human nature to do this but I have trained specifically for it, andas Matt said in his post if I am out of wack or POI changes with my bow, this is one of the first things I look at to fix the problem. If you can train yourself to consistently do this, it will clean up a lot of the high/low misses people experience.

And I avoided it because I know I am long winded when it comes to this stuff..........didn't want to make anyones ears bleed......[8D]

Matt.....RJ....thanks for the clarification. I'm in NO WAY saying I shoot "Like" you guys....(as far as results)....but I do shoot "like" you guys (as far as technique).

For me...I "happened" upon the technique. I used to shoot a small peep and a different sight. When I switched to a larger peep.....

...I heard angels.....and the light came on. I actually jumped on my bow shop owner for not telling me about this technique (in a kidding manner). To be honest...I'm not sure he knows to this day what I'm talking about.

Im not getting involved, but i want to add that i shoot liek GMMAT, i center the ring around the pins in my peep, then put the desired pin on the target.

I do as Matt, Matt, and Jeff said as well, but with the longer yardage pins (50+) I struggle with what Arthur was talking about because they are so far from center that my brain wants to automatically center them. It takes a very conscious effort to keep the pin guard centered and at times will screw up my shot progression. Unfortunately, I'm not as smart as RJ and I will not let down but try to force the shot and invariable screw it up.

For you golfers, it's kind of like when your backswing feels out of sync but you go ahead and swing away anyway and watch your shank disappear into the woods.

I center my housing, not individual pins.

This came naturally and not from repeated practice.

So... when you guysline the peepwith the housing, and you're using the bottom pin, I assume the pin is nowhere near centered in the peep?? Correct?
I have always just centered the desired pin in the peep, but I can see how the other way can be more accurate if your eye is'nt very good with centering?

I just started shooting this way when I got my new Guardian a few weeks ago. It was a simple transition for me, and I like it. My sight has an orange ring around it that fits just inside my peep. I see it out of my perriferal vision and then just put the right pin on the target. Might not be for everyone but I really did not have a problem switching at all. Now it is automatic and I don't even think about it.
