What's the concensus on the best time to ask Permission on new land?
I mean I have 2 local farms..1, I basically have total access..but always stop to yack with the farmer and get the Mandatory Permission slip signed (Ohio). He also clues me in to what he's seeing and he always tells me "kill'em all!"
The second lady is really old and she likes me to ask near the season opener, and again get the slip filled out for the State.
But If I was to ask on a totally new property when is the best time? I know folks don't like you asking just before the season in most cases. But asking now seems too early, to the point it may put some land-owners off??? So what do ya think? Early August?? Season opens End of Sept.

Ask during the slow time of the year after they have crops planted. Most should be done now which would make this as good as time as any. At this time of the year they have more time to stop and yap. Plus there is plenty of stuff during this off time that you can help them with in exchange for hunting rights, from bailing to mending fence. Don't ask during harvest time like many do, that's a thorn in their paw unless you're willing to climb on a tractor or a grain truck and help right then and there. Good luck

I like to ask now or even sooner so I can get a leg up on some scouting. Then I will pop in to say hi and ask if there is anything I can do for them to show my appreciation for their permission. Before the opener I'll stop by again to remind them that I will be out and ask if there has been any changes to their parking requirements. I like to try to build a relationship with them that will last.
