Gettin All Shined Up
#1
Laying in bed last night going over my deer fantasies i started thinkin ahead to my opening day this august when many of the bucks are still in velvet and others are not.I suddenly realized that i have never seen a buck in the midst of shedding velvet. Any time i see them they either are full velvet or all shined up. I am hunting everyday at this time usually for elk but see a pile of bucks so i am out there in position to see it but yet never have. I was just wondering how many of you guys have seen the half on half off kinda thing? Oh and i posted this here because i felt mainly bowhunters are in the woods at the time the velvet comes off. Thanxs.

Same here , I've seen them in full velvet in the late summer but come Sept. and Oct. when I'm out putting my stands up I don't see them at all.
Then around the end of Oct . I see a few bucksall nice and shinney and there was a few times when I scouting around and found some rubs , I noticed some dried velvet by them.

I seen it a few times, the hole process is very fast, seen them with velvethanging one day, and a clean rack the next. Even seen one chewing on the shed velvet, couldn't see if he actually ate it from where I was, but he was defiantly chewing on it! I will look, I think I have it on one of my old homevideo's.

The only critter I have ever seen half on/off was a big old bull moose. I was pre-scouting for elk archery season, and ran into him in a swampy/wallowy spot. I have found stripped velvet that was wet and bloody on one other occasion (same area, different year). This is also a rare occurence. I think most stripped velvet dries out quickly andis devoured by scavengers soon after it is rubbed off.
