What have you you learned about bowhunting in 2006?

HuntingGUS,
Here's an idea - don't shoot them through the shoulders?!

I've learned that lifeisgreat, andto live everyday to the fullest as you never know when will be your last. And to thank the good lord for family and being fortunateof all the good things that has happened for me.
Oh... and to switch back to fix blade broadheads, and only use mechanicals under specific conditions.

Germ,
Thanks for the offer, but I already know where to shoot them.
How about you come and see me and I'll teach you about properly field dressing, skinning, aging and butchering deer with the quality of meat being the first priority. Once we've agreed on the basics of meat prep, you can then teach me what I'm doing wrong. Butif we agree that I'm not doing anythingwrong,maybe you could be man enough to admit that the bow is less than favorable? That is "if" the "quality" of the"venison" is the "first priority". I am totally aware that there are more reasons to hunt and I enjoy them all, I was simply stating what I had learned.

Excuse me everyone – but isn’t the intent of this forum, and more over this thread a resource for us to share knowledge? Or is this a place for people with low self-esteem to pat each other on the back and pretend that they are among the elite? Is what I said really that hard to understand? Can we be honest with each other? I mean really – can we be honest with each other, or are our fears going to get in the way of honesty?
I didn’t say that anything was unethical, or even suggest anything in that direction. Sorry if it got taken that way, but I knew that it would, but I said it anyway, because I was being honest!

We or at least I come here for more than knowledge. Just for fun sometimes. Then again I've been around for a while and am not trying to fit in anymore. I remember what it was like when I first came here. Kind of like your felling now. I apperciate you honesty, knowledge and taking the sport seriously. Good to know there are people like you out there.

Let me be honest.
I also learned that if I didn't STRICTLY bowhunt.....I'd have NO place to hunt......NOvenison in my freezer....and none in the freezer of the family I donate meat to.
Killer....you HAD to know the response you would elicit. I didn't type the above to rile you. I didn't. There's (like you always tell me.....) more than one way to take game. If I wanted the MOST proficient way to put venison in my freezer......I'd buy my friend Mark a NC license and a box of ammo andlet him shoot 'em off his deck.
You know why people bowhunt. I know that. I know how passionate you are about gun hunting, too. Good for you. I wish I had other hunting interests.

HuntingGUS,
Yes, I was being sarcastic. Here is why;
I think your comment was/is ignorant, and it annoyed me. If you don’t try to shoot a deer through the shoulders with a bow, why would you with a rifle? You can get pretty picky about your shots when carrying a rifle. But you for some reason ruin a bunch of meat when you carry one, and referred to it as “minced meat”. I don’t get it, well I guess I do. I think it is you who doesn’t get it. You will find any excuse you can to defend bow hunting, which is fine. It only presents a problem (to me by the way) when you do it so adamantly that you attempt to defy logic and rational thinking.
Nodog,
I come here to have fun too some times, go look at some of my responses in the “deer hunting” forum from earlier today and see for yourself. I think I know Germ pretty well, well not really, but at least well enough that he knows that I respect him as a hunter and as a person, and I could be wrong, but I’ll take a chance at looking really stupid and say that I think he feels the same way.
My problem is with the denial that takes place in this forum. I see it as a serious problem. A psychological one at that. I’m leaning toward Narcissism, but not really sure. Narcissism is a condition were people continuously need a hefty supply of positive comments directed towards them. They need to be viewed as the elite. There is a lot of “supply” to be had here with the “we’re so great atmosphere” that is being created, people with this condition would love it in here. And the way that I see it, there are also going to be a bunch of young impressionable hunters coming here for information and guidance, and we (the normal ones) need to keep this condition in check so that others get a fair shake. I don’t understand why more people can’t seem to see through this crap. Here is a list of regular comments that support my opinion so that I’m not making an assertion;
“Hunting with guns is just too easy” contradicted by comments like “How can I get to my stand quietly”, “I shot a deer now what”, “you should wait six hours before trailing a deer”, “I can’t find him”, “gun hunters suck”, “general firearms season has officially opened, I’m bummed” and etc…
So, I conclude that we seem to be unable to accept honesty. Why else would we say “hunting with a gun is too easy” when we can’t get to our stand quietly? Only an inexperienced hunter would say these things, but there are a lot of people agreeing, who all look just as ignorant, but not to the young ones that I’m worried about.
“You need to wait after the shot at least six hours”. That is a quote from this forum, but all the sudden we’re arguing about if that is favorable for meat preparation?
Here is my opinion of the perfect hunting scenario “if” the venison is the first priority;
The deer would be pretty close, easily within the range that you have practiced in, and become very proficient. It would also be completely unaware of any danger, and would be presenting you with a broadside or slightly quartering away shooting angle, and the animal is completely still. There would be no obstacles between your weapon and the animal to adversely affect your shot, and the weapon of choice would be capable of killing the animal instantly. The temperature outside would be pretty cold. At least cold enough to reduce the deer’s core body temperature rapidly to 38 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit, where it would be maintained for 4 to 10 days away from animals, insects and other pollutants. It would also be out of direct sunlight and not allowed to freeze at all during this period.
Now of course there are many more variables to this, but those are the ones that came to mind as challenges while bow hunting during the warmer part of the early season, so I answered the question how I saw fit – honestly. This year during one bow hunt I wasn’t wearing a shirt, so I was so far away from the above scenario that I left the woods. Seeing bugs on my deer ruins my anticipation of the recipes that I am looking forward to.
GMMAT,
Is that you SB?
All,
I stated what I had learned. I made the best of it by agreeing (with me) not to take game for the sole purpose of meat on warm days. I will save these warm days for the murder that I hold so dear to my heart, because I enjoy that part as well.
See ya!
