I appreciate that, Bob...I really do. It was the first time I'd seen this deer in over 2 months....and he's simply prehistoric looking compared to the other deer in my woods. I was a little taken aback (OK...a LOT).

He came in without me getting a chance to turn around. When I got around.....he was at 4 yds. He looked like a bull that's loose in a ring after he throws a would-be rider off.

I was in awe at the difference in a MATURE whitetail buck and the "deer" I'd been seeing. That encounter was the highlight of my season.
You deserve the compliment and respect. And I'm sure you got some sort of personal satisfaction for your decision. ;)

MichaelHunsucker,
I wasn't really directing my post toward you. It was morein general. I realize every situation is different, and that hunters (me included) will take different shots at different animals. The thread seemed to be getting in to a take the shot vs. not take the shot. I just thought it was worth pointing out.
My opinion for the situation is, if I was looking to fill a buck and a doe tag and my doe came though, I would have probably passed on the shot, and see if she'd present something better, since I wouldn't want to spend the rest of my day looking for her. But if it was a big monster that I'd spent a bunch of time on, I would have probably done exactly what you did and be happy to look for him all day.
Sorry about the miss,
KP

Killer makes a great point, If it was a buck I was after I am going to try and stick a killing shot in him. Where I hunt and many others we are only going to get 1 shot at him a season. Some guys who like to say "just let him walk" hunt in areas where a 140'' my be walking down the trail next.

He was confident in the shot, his choice, he has to live with what happens.

Would I have shot, well I had a 10 in 2005 same angle, and he ran 60 yds after I hit him, but he was within 15 yds zone. + 15 yds I do not shoot, again my choice.

It's kind of sad to me thatpeople feel that kind of pressure to kill. And would make different shot selections decisions depending on antler size. -Just a personal observation and opinion.

Germ:

In Joe Brooks book he states in NO UNCERTAIN TERMS that you HAVE to be ready to put your arrow into the vitals of the deer you're after.....and that the perfect angle may not always present itself.

It's like....

Hey.....hear that little voice in the back of your head???? That's YOUR ethics speaking to you. He don't speak to ME. MINE does. What's right for YOU....may not be right for ME. Only you know what you're capable of.......what you're willing to risk........what you can do and sleep good at night.

I don't want MY ethics talking down to me. BUT....if I'd practiced the head-on shot (or any other) and was CONFIDENT I could get my broadhead into the deer's vitals......I'd do it. Period. End of story. Isn't that the goal of any archery hunter? Get your arrow into the deer's vitals. Final answer.

KeepYOUR ethics to yourself. Everyone needs to find their own happy median with regards to ethics and their abilities.

Well Bob we all can talk(post), but when it comes to game time we may make a different choice. I do not make blanket statements on what I will do. The buck I shot this year was perfect angle, and thedoe I shotwas not. I never get caught in the "Heat of the moment" excuse. Every shot I have taken was 100% my choice.

I also have let two giant 8's walk because they were moving. Wheather I take a shot or not is soley up to me, and I can tell you hunters of the past who had to eat stuck an arrow in the animal anyway they could. In my area I will get 1 maybetwo chances at a buck I want to shoot. I am going to try my hardest to put an arrow in his vitals for a killing shot.

If a hunter in confient in the shot who am I to judge them.

Bob,
I just typed up two pages worth of reply to you, but I decided that I'm done talking to you. Posting it would only lead to haveing to post more and I've wasted enough time on you already. I'll delete it and learn from it.

Could have PM'd it to me. I would have read it. Sorry to be a waste of your time I guess. :(

I totally agree. And sometimes I even ask that question before forming an opinion on a thread (but never if the subject is different shot selection based on antler size). -However, I'll usually get blasted for asking. :(Luckily I am not in that boat (hunting because I have to eat) and I feel fortunate not to have that type of pressure lurking over me.

KeepYOUR ethics to yourself.
Why would that be considered a forbidden subject?
