Made a bad shot on a good buck tonight (with video)

I just got back from hunting tonight. I was trying to shoot a doe and blew one opportunity when my release got stuck and as i started to let down my arrown went flying nowhere close to the deer. I then had another doe coming in and she got twenty yards away. She was walking so i tried to stop her in a shooting lane. She wouldnt stop and kept walking. As i was still drawn back i looked behind her to see a nice 9 coming. He walked down the same trail and i had to grunt at him with my mouth three times to get him to stop. He stopped a little behind a tree so i had to lean over to get the shot. I incorectly guessed him at 30 yards when he was much closer and made a very bad shot.

To me it looked like it was definately above the spine and far back. He ran off but slowed down and stopped, then went on to trot again. I definatly would have thought that there would be no chance in hell of me recovering this deer, but i am almost certain i heard him crash.

It was about a 20 yard shot and i was way up in the tree (probably 25 feet) When i went to get the arrow it was sticking in the gound at about a 45 degree angle. It had just a little bit of blood on the fletchings and some hair.

Is there some possible way that i hit an artery that runs along the spine in the back? Check the video and tell me what you think. Im going to head out in the morning to look for him.

Still bummed,
Mike

After watching it in both real time and slow motion a dozen times, its a flesh wound.

The deer will live.

The artery you're talking about runs underneith the spine, not above it.

Right throught the back strap, no infection it should live no problem.

There is always a possibility, and you should follow up. BUt in my honest opinion...you hit that happy place of no mans land. The worst you probably did was put a hurting on his loins...I shot a beautiful 8 3 years ago...same spot...actually shot him again 4 days later...he was fine...well until the second time around.

LOOK ANYWAY THOUGH>>>YOU OWE IT TO THE ANIMAL!

Exactly, your above the spine, nothing but a flesh wound and a live deer.

Yup, looks like you just educated him and gave him a sore back. Next time a hunter bleats at that buck to stop him he'll be heading for the hills. Good luck.

I gotta admit, that took some major coconuts to put the video on here for everyone to see. Alot of people wouldn't have done that.It looks like your arrow just grazed him. Good luck getting another crack at him, and thanks for sharing the video.

I agree with the others . a backstrap hit . Just like a bee-sting ! You may not have misjudged the distance . You might have forgotten to bend at the waist and dropped your bow arm . That's the usual problem of high hits from shooting from an elevated position .

Man that was a silver platter deer. I know how you feel. That sucks. I think that deer will live, and don't let it eat you up. Thats a Tuff one

Flesh wound but check it out anyway.. good video, only one tip besides obvious.. Quartering Too shots are not usually a bow hunters best friend, best to wait for a Quartering Away.. But I'm guessing you know this and I'm just blabbing the obvious.

Yeah, well i dont have anything to hide/prove to anybody on this site i just thought i would share my experience with everyone and get their feedback. It seems as though it is unanimous that the deer will hopefully live which is what i expected. I did think that i heard the deer crash, but im sure it was something else. I will just have to find out tomorrow. Thanks everybody for all the replies

Yeah, i had a camera man with me. I always hunt with a cameraman and have gotten all my kills this year (Two bucks and two does) on film. It is so awesome to have them to look back at after its all over.

I agree with others it was above the spine, on a shot that wasn't taken on the best angle. But the deer should live. Of course every deer we shoot at deserves to be followed up on 100% so don't just check it out half-heartedly based on our comments (and I'm sure you wouldn't). Good video, and good luck.

Did you notice the limb in front of the vitals?

IMO, It's a good thing you you didn't hit directly below the impact. You would have only gotten one lung. Bst case scenerio IMO would be spine/artery if you hit directly below the impact.

You would have had to shot through the limb (or very close to it) and a lot of bone to get both lungs the way that deer was standing.

You may want to consider not taking quartering to shots as tought by Bowhunter Education Courses.

In any event, this deer will be OK.

did anyone see the second vidio clip called doe kill or something like that.I gotta wonder where it is that you can walk up on a feeding doe in plain wide open, and shoot her with a bow after she sees you.Was it one of those gamefarms, was it in a place where no man has ever gone before? I gotta know! Oh yea,That buck is fine, but your shooting.....

I disagree.

Bob,Where was the camerman ,directly behind,to the right or left?

Teejay, You shouldn't show video ofbad shot why?

ok he shot high and a foot back, its a miss. What if he would have shot low and a foot back right through the guts. Or stabed it right into the branch. I think it was a very poor decision to shoot at this animal and even a worse shot! It is easy enough to screw up a perfect shot much less a virtually impossible one. He had everything stacked against him.

I disagree.

Bob,Where was the camerman ,directly behind,to the right or left?
It looks to me as if the shooter was to the left of the camera man. Can't say for sure if the limb was in the way, BUT, the deer would have been a at a worse quartering to angle then the camera man. Looks like the arrow penetrated directly above the scare already on it. One lung scenerio in my eyes anyway if the arrow was to impact directly below where it did. Like I said, I think a spine, artery would be best case scenerio for a quick death if the arrow was to hit directly below where it did. Not that he wouldn't find a possible one lung/liver hit deer (it would just take longer and bit more suffering).

In any case the deer is OK. Which is good news to me anyway.
