Atlas I agree and respect your choice, I am happy for you. All I am saying is there are mature deer in your area
What is your definition of "mature deer in your area"?? 1? 10? 50?

If I lived up there I would hunt just like you, I am serious.
Then what is with the stupid comments about me shooting young deer?
To get your goat, I would not shoot fawns, but hell I have dragged enough out for Gramps[8D]

I can't believe this thread is still going.....

I think it's safe to say that some regions have a better population of deer than others and in some spots it's easier to "have the opportunity" to get a shot at a trophy buck than others. That said you still need to put the time in that it takes to shoot big mature bucks, a little luck never hurts either.

I also believe that no matter what the population is there will always be old mature bucks, maybe not as many but rest assured they are there. There is no way ALL of the mature bucks are killed every year, some slip by even in the most hunter populated of states.

Just don't b!tch because you aren't killing big bucks if all you shoot is little ones and don't degrade and put down those who do (and are happy to do so) just because you choose to hunt trophies only.

There are plenty of deer for all types of hunters, shoot what you want, when you want to. Try to keep the herds as healthy as possible and the doe to buck ratios in check as best you can and you will have deer to hunt for years to come.
This is probably the first time I've ever agreed with BigJ12, but his post is right on the money. It says what I've been saying all along.

AurtherP, I really hope that you have your highest boots on because you're really going to need them to protect yourself from the truck load of pure BS that you've dumped. I've never heard such head in the sand, antiquated rubbish in my whole life. Between you and the most long winded, whiney school girl, posts of atlasman, I can't figure out who is the most delusional. Don't you guys ever read any material written by some of the more prominent whitetail biologists?Evidentally not, it sounds like you guys base your information on your own personal experiences gathered from your back yards. It sounds like you guys were left in the dark.

1st Atlas I really am enjoying this thread.

Lets take a square mile 640 Acers.

How manydo you think you have in your area(bucks)?

My best guess for Northen MI is 1 to 2, I am getting my data from my Cousin who hunts there a lot. He is very good hunter, 2 bucks and 1 doe with a bow. He hunts the same block and see's 2 maturebucks a year. He has taken 2 with a rifle.

My farm-areaI would say 3 to 4 1 per farm in the area.

Wrong again, 22 years of hunting Northen MI public land[8D]
I would say that makes you a reliable source for infor about Northern MI public land and daddy's farm.............if I want a question answered about either of those places I will ask..............I don't pretend my 19 years in the NY woods gives me the first clue about what happens in MI, your daddy's farm or any other place for that matter.........I know my woods though. I just don't pretend to know everyone else's (like some people)

Atlas same here in MI, LOL 1 buck on the farm shot at 15 times! They fond it becasue they picked a corn field.
Exactly.........the 7 pt my brother arrowed had a wound on it's neck and the opposite shoulder blade had a nice perfect star shaped broadhead mark in it. He had been shot at least twice before and shot at who knows how many times..............and he was 1 1/2. It's nuts sometimes. The big buck I killed (shotgun BTW not rifle) had a broadhead wound on his chest where someone nicked him low and he had a piece of his ear blown off.......and a hunk of flesh hanging off his face below his eye (the taxidermist said it was from another buck but who knows)

SO I ask you AP, why is it easier with a compound when the majority of bucks/deer ever taken are within range of a stick bow shooter? Hey, your brought it up.
Of course I'm not AP (BTW, great post!). But you did ask a question. And the answer to me is simple. I'm not trying to downplay anything in the compound world.

It's the actual archer skill required to be able to shoot a stick out to 20-25 yards. Personally, I have to work to keep skill level needed to put an arrow into the kill zone on a deer sized animal on a daily basis most of the time twice a day. If I put if off for a week, I can expect it to take me at least that long to get it back again, sometimes longer. I have to work on form as much or more then shooting for accuracy. But I love shooting it and I love working on it. I love the challenge and determination needed in traditional. The payoffs are huge. I have a lot of respect for those who make everything themselves right downtheir bows, arrow, nocks, andflint knapping their broadheads.

Now I have not touched my compound for over two years now. But, I guarantee that I can pickthe compound(if it's still tuned) up and outshoot my traditional bow in one afternoons time.

Arthur P-nice post!
Other than the elitist remarks about compoound bow users.
I am a compound bow user, and the post didn't hurt my feelings in the least. I feel better killing a deer with my bow than I do with my rifle. So I can only imagine how I would fell if I killed one using a traditional method.

GregH.... If my post was as bad as all that, then it should be simple for you to correct me on a point by point rebuttal. I invite you to do so.

Those prominent whitetail biologists are publishing studies that were paid for by...Who? Do they not work for ranches that are totally gone over to QDM? Are they not in QDMfor the sole purpose of increasing antler size? Isn't the sole purpose of increasing antler size so they can demand even higher prices for hunting on those ranches?

Are you talking real science or are you talking superfluous propaganda in the interest of generating $$$$?

I have to look to see where their paychecks come from before I believe any published study. You know as well as I do that the ARF'ers have paid biologists to put out studies that show hunting is bad for wildlife, so please don't tell me you accept any wildlife study without question!
