Back from my bowhunt in Ohio/Indiana. Had a great time but totally failed.
[8D] I really only hunted 4 days out of the 7 I was there. Saw deer everytime but nothing I wanted to shoot. My nephew is trying to cultivate a herd of bucks. He told me to shoot anything I wanted to. I told him I've shot enough deer with the bow that if I never shoot another I won't be disappointed. I just love being out and seeing them.
Had numerous shots and slam dunks at dinks and basket racks. I did buy a doe tag for Ohio, but with all the deer I was seeing I held out for big boy. He never showed.... we never saw one of the big ones. THe weather turned awfully warm and crazy while I was there. It was so warm we were sweating most afternoons by the time we got in a tree. I guess our scent control and spraying down liberally with White Lightning did the trick. I wasn't picked off once by a deer even though I had several down wind.
Besides the weather and full moon, we had the problem of thousands of acres of unharvested corn. They've had so much rain that the farmers haven't been able to get at it. They whacked a bunch on THursda and Friday but there is still an awful lot standing where we were. We went up to the farmer that lets us hunt his place in Ohio. He's fit to be tied to get at his corn just like everyone else is.
The land we hunted in Ohio is a tough hunt but great deer country. There are virtually NO trees to use climbers on and few places to put a hang on. It's acres and acres of the thickest thickets you can imagine with just scrub trees. I don't think I've ever seen so much big buck sign in one area. Every buck I saw(which was several) was trolling or chasing an unreceptive doe. Obviously the does weren't ready or there would be other bucks along for the chase. My last night we saw 6 different bucks, all alone, all trolling or worrying some doe. We figure about this coming week after I left and Doug used his week off they'll be PRIME.[&:] So be it. We had a ball.
I bought a license for Indiana but only hunted it one afternoon and saw a nice respectable buck that I said I'd let pass. he was a nice 4 on one side but a screwed up rack on the other. Not a lot of mass so I figured he needed another year at least but probably two. We just couldn't drag ourselves away from the Ohio traffic to hunt Indiana again. We were going to hunt it Saturday but the weather was rainy and I decided to spend an extra day at my sisters' who's fighting cancer.
It was a tough life I tell you. With the hot weather we called a break everyday, went to the house, ate lunch, took a nap, got up and showered and went back to a tree. Came home, ate, talked, went to bed and started it all over again. I saw at least one buck every time in a tree except one when I saw nothing. I found the ultimate hunt spot but decided against hanging a stand there in the heat. It was a good 3/4 mile away from the truck. I ear marked it and will hang a stand there first thing next year. I hung a couple good stands and just left them there for my nephew to hunt. With all the ground I covered on top of the wading from my salmon trip the old legs are getting in shape to climb those NY hills this coming week. It's hell,.... but someone has to do it. The Ohio farmers does all no till farming and has all his fields bedded with underground drainage systems. He prefers we don't drive the fields unless we have to to recover a deer so it was lots of walking. We could use Dougs 4 wheelers but chose to play low profile and keep all happy. I had my deer sleigh so we probably would have towed rather than rode in any case.
A little beat up from the drive home but in good shape. Blue Undies are in the wash in prep for NY on Wednesday.[8D]

Yup Rick, they've poured the foundation and basement walls and start decking next week. Moving NW of Rome. The nearest town you may have heard of is Camden or possibably Sylvan Beach. My 3 brothers will all be within about 1/2 hour. One in Booneville, one 200 yards away and one in Cicero.
