Checked my baits this weekend and both were hit. A lot of guys recommend pouring used frier grease around your bait site. Bears and other critters track it around and leave trails back to your bait for other bears to find.

When you put the bait out start out by using alot to get bears coming in. Once you have them coming in start cutting back on the amount of bait used. This way bears will compete to get to the bait earlier, therefore coming in before dark.

I do the same. Start with lots of bait & then once being hit cut back so they have to come more often. I also try to bait late morning so they tend to come in the afternoon b/4 dark. I also like to take a big garbage bag (double) that I have filled with whole fish that I let rot inside the bag until there is lots of liquid in the bottom. Take to the bait site & hang up high with a small drip hole punched in the bottom. The smell is BAD & helps to get the Bears attention-continues to drip for some time. Don't get the liquid on anything-it will take paint off. Make sure your baiting laws allow this. I hunted with a guide that used to tie a beaver carcuss (he was a trapper) to a tree by the bait with #9 wire. They always seemed to go for that 1st. He put it shoulder high so the Bear had to stand to get it.
One thing about baiting your own-once they start hitting the bait they know your scent-just remember-YOUR SCENT is related to FOOD. Be careful.
