I hunt in MN, I dig a three by three foot pit and about 6 inch deep and make a two sided baracade like a V shape so the bear can only one or two ways. I use oats, sweet corn, apples, bacon, bacon grease, honey, any kind of raw meat except pork of course usauly the meat is freezer burned for me to use it or scraps from the butcher, table scraps, liquid licorice with water to spray for sent and liquid smoke, molasses with sugor, fish guts, and I also fry the bacon right at the bait sight or a honey burn. Other guys have popped popcorn out in the woods with sugor in it, dog food I will try this coming year. I will admit this is my only third year trying. Last year I had a 300# plus black bear coming only 1 hour before sunrise every 2 or 3 days, could not get him to come in the daylight I need another bear to start eating the bait to for more compition for the bait so the bear would come early at night. One of the mornings I got to my stand about 4:30am and the bear came in at 4:53, shooting hours was 5:35am. I saw him very well in the morning because of the full moon, I could have shot him with my 12 guage but I do obay the rules and I want shoot the bear with a bow. I could tell he was big because I cut a 6 foot burch log next to the bait and he was very large and round. This coming year I am going to try using a radio after I get the bear coming in all the time. I have heard other hunters using it and works very well and it is very legal. I hope this helps.

Meat works the best for attracting bears but oats and mollasses and even old doughnuts will keep them coming. The very best is old beaver carcasses but unless you know a trapper and have him save them for you they are nearly impossible to get. When baiting check your baits every day as if you let the bait run out for a few days the bears will abandon the site.I usually plan on at least 200 lbs of bait per site so can replenish each sight at least five or six times using about 30lbs per time.I never hunt a bait until it has been hit at least three days in a row as the bears are more wary the first few days that they use a site.

Hey,
I agree with these guys.Oats ,Molasses, pastries, meat , grease, dog food, All these items work. Bears eat almost anything. The real trick is how and when you bait. Bear are like all animals, they feed in the early morning hours or at dusk and thru the night. So, always bait midday. Never approach your baitsites during primetime. If you kick a big bear off the bait he will not visit the site except at night, feed them only between 11 am and 2pm. Be in your stand by 2pm and stay til dark. You WILL get him.

Actually baiting in the late afternoon can work well.I run my baits so that I am finishing my run at about 6pm.I bang on the bait pail and make noise after filling it then walk away noisily.According to my trail timers some bears are at the bait from 15 to 30 minutes after I leave. Many bears actually stay close enough to the bait to hear you come and go.I then sneak into the stand that I intend to sit and most bears show between 7pm and 10pm.It is light enough to shoot in my location until about 10pm or slightly after. Some of the real cautious bears do not show up until after dark.Too get them in earlier,I reduce the amount of bait so that by the time the older bear shows, the younger braver bears have eaten most of the bait. This method works quite often although some bears will never come to a bait in daylight reguardless of your tactics.
