MAybe I'll go back to punching and maybe I won't but I can tell you one thing, since I switched I haven't missed my aiming point by more than one inch and I consider that a BIG improvement.

I went back and re-read what I posted there and I guess it sounded a bit harsh. I wish you the best of luck, and I hope you don't go back to punching. It typically is only a temporary solution though. I went through probably 10+ extremely pricey high dollar releases before I learned this lesson, and I have been down that road myself. Relearning the shot sequence is the only way to beat it for sure though, and it is not a quick or easy process.

Rick Iunderstand what you're saying. My bad habit was anticipating the release and I think with the zero travel and hair trigger on the Tru Ball it will help me not to do that anymore. Thanks for your input.

Does anyone know of any downsides to a thumb release?

I had an awful bout with target panic or punching years ago.I went to pure back tension for two years, for everything, target, hunting etc.I now use a truball pinky extreme and have for three years at least.Through lots of blind bale and shot sequence discipline I have licked it.
I think the biggest consideration is a relaxed mind, realizing you don't have to shoot, you can let down if it doesn't feel good.I found with a little mental detachment ie.not caring so much I actually shot a whole lot better.
Good luck to you gutshot!

i kinda agree with rick james. think about it. your punching the trigger because your not thinking about it your just doing it..right now with the new release you HAVE to think about it because its new and diffrent. but once your used to it you MIGHT fall back into doing it..maybe not though....let us know...just my thinking on it. i tend to think about stuff too much lol..but i hope it works out for you.....

just a question...what causes people to punch the trigger?? thats like jerking the trigger on a rifle right?? is it shot anticipation?? i always thought people jerked rifle triggers because they knew the recoil was coming. i hope i dont jerk my bow trigger. im ordering it this week finally..i think i have good trigger control when shooting a rifle. thats one of the things dad been teaching me all my life. "trigger control..breath....SQUEEZE the trigger" sometimes when im shooting i can HEAR him saying that even though hes not there lol. wierd...if thats what trigger punching is i think its all mental and you need to slow down and think about it while you do it. i bet your form and accuracy will be better too. good luck..let us know how it works out. one thing i thought of would be a back tension release. you wouldnt know its coming. thats almost like a hair trigger on a flintlock. its there to give you a surprise so theres no time to flinch and you wont know when to flinch. forgive me for all the gun comparisions. thats all i know right now, though ive read ALOT about archery i have yet to shoot a bow since i was a youngun...i cant wait to get my bow though! i better train myself properly so i dont fall into bad habits huh?? thanx for warning me about trigger punching..i heard about it before but now i know i need to watch for myself doing it

WOW!!! What am I doing wrong? I currently use a TRU something or other but have tried a few differnet ones. I don't pull my trigger, I let my finger slide of of it as though I'm holding the trigger back then slide it over the top to release.
