Default Rust proofing tree steps

Do any of you boil your tree steps with rust preventative stuff? I know there is a powder or solution you can get from trapping supply houses that will make your steps black and inhibit rust.
I want to do this.I also want to cap the ends of my steps.Have any of you used a dip or any thing else that has worked for you?My biggest concern is odor!
