Default Anybody hunt north-central Iowa?

Just checking to see if anybody else hunted North-Central Iowa. My friend goes to school at UNI. I'm going down there this year for the slug season, and possibly some bow. He said its' really difficult to find places to hunt. Does anyone know of any land that we could hunt there, private or public? Thanks!

You know good hunting places are hard to find and when most guys have a good place, they tend to keep it to themselves. That having been said, check the large public area in Butler county. There is over 4000 acres and believe me not only ducks live there. I have seen lots of deer there. There is also public hunting along the river that goes through Steamboat Rock, but I really don't know that area. The brother of a friend gets a muzzleloader deer in that area every year. I won't get any more specific in this forum, but I might in e-mail. I have two sons that are college age, so I have a soft spot in my heart for guys your age. Hope this helps a little. Jim

James I hunt just North of Des Moines. Check out the DNR website for Iowa, there is alot of public area around. Anywhere is good hunting the first couple days of shotgun as deer are running everywhere, also bullets are flying everywhere, that is why I stay inside and grab my bow when the shotgun season is over.

If you have trouble finding the DNR website let me know.

P.S. farmers in your area are 50/50 on reagarding to granting permission. Many hunters destroy crops and shot lifestock giving us a black eye.

Good luck and feel free to ask me any questions.

P.S If you are willing to travel South, Big Creek Lake (20 miles north of Des Moines) has many thousands of acres around the lake that is public hunting and usually produces many big bucks
