I practice up to 45 yards but hunt at 30 yards max. I don't own a range finder and can estimate out to 30 yards pretty accurately. That decides it more then anything. Once hunting season starts, I pull the 45 yard pin off. Not because of the temptation should the situation arise, but so I don't accidently use it in the heat of the moment. I only like 2 pins for hunting. Unlike pratice there is not a do over shot in hunting should I grab the wrong pin. Keeps it simple.

Tyler practices out to 30 and hunts 25 yards max. He is actually a littlebetter shot then I am. He max practice andhuntingdistance isdue to thecapabilities of his bow then his shooting capabilities.

In heavy foliage I would limit my shooting lanes to 35 yards and under. I open terrain on largergame,45 max.

I prefer to keep my bowhunting shots at 30 yards or less.

To many variables to give a definite yardage. I have shot two or three at 40 yards and missed one last year at 47. Actually I skinned his brisket enough to put tallow on one blade of the broadhead. I didn't have time to range and guessed wrong. BUT, given time I see no problem shooting 50 yards. That said, I've passed up a lot of 30 and 40 yard shots waiting for something better that never happened. It is frustrating to have the biggest deer you ever had a chance to arrow at 33 yards broadside feeding. You let the shot go just knowing you're going to get a slam dunk in about 30 seconds. Then the bow gods take their revenge on you for your arrogance and the deer is gone without a shot. But, it was one of the coolest defeats I've ever had. I'd do it again just to watch the outcome unfold. It's called hunting. Anyone can kill a deer. Getting screwed is just priceless.[8D]

Well this will P.O. a lot of you off but its the truth. Im not proud of it but hey its the truth. Longest shot at a elk. 98 yards, complete pass thru elk went twenty yards and dropped. Longest shot at a cougar 50 yards steep down hill shot (frontal shot at that) In thick brush I had a 12"x12" target picture. cat made it 21 yards. Deer 72 yards walking hit a bit back found the deer after about a 375 yard track. craziest shot that I shouldn't have taken was a 8 point on a full run broad side at 20 yards Hit him perfect(lucky I admit) he went down in less that 40 yards. That said these are the only stupid shots I have taken in 25 years of bow hunting but they worked out. I have taken close to 100 big game animals with a bow and I only lost one deer shot at 13 yards. The only shots that I will take no matter what is at Cougar. they are a big problem here in Oregon and I'll kill every one I see. It aint pretty but its the truth. I find a lot of guys say 20 yards but in reality they shoot a lot farther than that but don't admit it. Flame away. Most animals I kill are between 20 and 40 yards. the ones I stated are exceptions to that and are not condoned even by me. I was young once and I am a self taught hunter right or wrong thats the Truth.
