Default Ratlle Bag or Antlers for rattling???

Should I be using a rattle bag or antlers for rattling when it comes time to start rattling? I have a bag right now that I use because I don't have to move that much to operate it, but it just seems really high pitched and I think it doesn't sound that natural. What's your opinion on the subject?

Bag or Antlers?

I honestly don't think that it is very important that rattling sounds exactly like real antlers. If a deer is in the moood to investigate he will. I used real antlers for years, but I got tired of carrying them, so I bought a rattling bag for convenience. I actually have much better results now with the bag. It may not sound perfect at close range, but at any kind of distance you probably could barely tell the difference. I think the advantage of the bags and other devices, besides being much easier to carry, is that the higher pitched sound carries much farther than the sounds from real antlers, allowing more deer to hear you. Now this is all speculation, and it may be a coincidence, but I do get better results with the bag.

It is alll personal preference.

First do you have a set of antlers to use? Last years sheds or past racks natural works best in most cases.

As far as pitch of the rattle bag I find that if you play with it a bit rough and it sounds natural. Compare it to sounds of real antlers and see how close it sounds to the real thing.

But another important thing to consider is that with the rattle bag there is probably a lanyard and another piece of elastic to wrap around it to silence them. It would be a shame to draw one in and drop antlers or have them dangle into stand or fall on the ground and spook one away. Quiet & being still as we all know are some of the most important things we need to be while in the woods.

Just my two cents

Goalieman32, where do you hunt? I've read on this board (I don' know if its true) that rattling is good for the south & mid-west, but deer in the north-east don't respond to it as well. Being that I am hunting in NJ, I stick to my grunt and bleat can. My rattle bag has sat at the botom of my closet for 2 years now. I've never been able to successfully rattle in a buck. Who knows?
