Kids in the woods.....What to do?
I have been hunting on 15 acres that lays to the side of an established country neighborhood. Every house has at least an acre, and many have more than that. I go out my back door, step over my back fence and I have about a half mile to the "Creek" (it's really a small river) and there are homesites not within hearing (and sometimes I can see the car lights when I am in my stands before dawn) I was in one of my stands yesterday, and I could hear some kids playing around in the woods over toward my other stand. I waited about an hour, and when I could hear a lot of commotion and saw some tree branches breaking and shaking in that direction, I walked over there and told them that probly shouldn't be out there. The were not far from my stand, but they hadn't mesed with it. I pointed out to the kids that I could easily discern between a child and a deer, so they had nothing to worry about from me, and I also said to them that it wasn't my land ( I have permission to hunt) so I really couldn't tell them not to be there. I said have a good day, and left it at that. I didn't want to scare them, but mostly I just wanted them to leave so they didn't scare off the deer. How do you guys handle that?

This is simply part of Suburban hunting. Either use it to your advantage by figuring out how the deer will move, or hunt early in the morning BEFORE the kids are outside. I have one stand site where this some times happens. The kids never stay long, they have no idea I am around and as soon as they leave the deer still come through. Deer do not seem to be alarmed by kids playing. They will stay clear of the area while the kids are in it, but they seem to know that they have nothing to fear from playing children.

One of my better stands is a good 20 min walk from any house. One evening I heard footsteps coming from where i have had many deer come from, I lifted my bow up and got ready. peering down a deer trail that runs through some pretty thick stuff I see a rainbow of bright green, red, blue and every other color you could imagine. One girl and two boys about 10 -12 yrs old are passing by me at 10 yds.
I stay perfectly still, face mask, gloves and all, figuring I will just let them pass. well as they walk into my shooting lane the darn girl sees me. Those does always pick you out
I gave them a wave and they took off screaming down the trail
Needless to say I saw no deer that night and felt pretty crappy about my great stealth and camo.

Think you did right. Have known of cases tho where deer don't seem to mind people around if they are really used to it.

I have to agree with Iron Buck on this one. My kids can play outside all evening and as soon as they come in I will see the deer come out of the woods. I just walk across the back yard and they don't show for a day or two.

I can be flinging arrows at the target in the back yard and have deer not more than 50 yards away watching.
Slip on some cammo and they skedaddle. Unkanny...
