Default Twisted tale and Horned Does

The boys were talking deer at work today when the subject of Does with horns came up.One guy said he harvested a 6 point Doe last year, and another said there is no way a Doe can grow horns.I told them I had shot a doe that had horns as well, and upon closer inspection it also had testicles! The guy that shot the 6 point doe was amazed...He wanted to know how I knew it was a doe,if there were udders.I said yeah, there were udders(others) but I didn't shoot at Does(those).I know, kinda corny but it just flowed out so smooth, everyone laughed except the guy that shot the horned dooe,he still wanted to know how I knew it was a doe I shot!LMAO

No, it can happen. A guy in Central IL killed a doe a few years back that had (I believe) 12 points. Very famous deer around here anyway. I used to hunt waterfowl on his farm and have seen the mount. I guess it was in several deer hunting magazines, but I didn't pay too much attention to it because I didn't deer hunt at the time. It's a freak of nature, but is possible.

Its called "Hermaphrodite" (sp). Hormones are all screwed up to varyious degrees. Its a natural occurance in most species. These horned does will usually have velvet on the antlers into early winter. It even occurs in about 1:10,000 humans.

Every year hermaphrodite deer are harvested all over the country, and it has the same reaction each year.

happens alot more than people think...he theory is that the doe is one of a set of twins born, one male , one female...the testosterone flowing around the womb (through the blood) causes the female to exhibit male tendencies. This is also quite common in cattle.

amazing what you can learn by reading

Yeah,I have seen antlered does as well,I was simply using a play on words while talking about a doe that had horns and testes.I think the antlered doe phenomonem is a lot like why my aunt Marge has a mustach.Hehehe...

Thats a fairly accurate scientific explanation except for one part. The whitetail deer or deer family for that matter , buck or doe , dont grow horns. They grow antlers<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
