RE: My first deer!! Was it "Humane"
The deer felt nothing.
A severed spine cuts all sensation.
5 minutes is nothing.
Did you sit quietly while he died or did you go to him?
The only suffering would be from fright from you standing
over him and not being able to flee.
Another arrow would be unnecessary.
Slitting the throat would be unnecessary.
He had no idea what hit him.
Aim for the vitals next time.
I shot my first deer in the earhole with a 30-30.
I was inexperienced and was looking at horns and
hit where I was looking.
That is what you did.
Congrats...eat him up!

No i think what you did is perfectly fine. Did you shoot at him straight on and hit his neck or just missed really bad? I do disagree with the shot but since you dropped him in his tracks you made a successful harvest and thats what counts. Maybe next time be more patient and wait for that shot that counts

I think if you did everything you could to make it a clean and quick kill, then yes it was humane. Somtimes shots do go astray, but it is up to us to make sure we give the animal the respect it deserves and complete the hunt.
I don't see anything wrong with the antlers. Good deer.

That's part of the responsibility of being a hunter. You know you are going to be taking the life of an animal so be prepared to deal with the less than perfect shot that you must follow up on. Everyone hates to see the animals suffer but at times they may, just like in nature. If a pack of dogs pulled him down they don't worry about it suffering. We as hunters are different. We do our best to make clean kills but if your not prepared to deal with a less than perfect shot where the animal may suffer then you may need to look into another sport.

nice bucks get smoked by cars and trucks all the time and the meat just wastes! thats not humane.if you shot him to the best of your ability thens its humane.I perfer archery, here we only have one week for shotgun (no rifles) and thats the week alot of people with no skill come out and take sloppy shots and wound animals.since alot of them around here couldn't be bothered to pick up a bow (its to hard) you should see all the deer at the butchers with missing legs. P.S i'm not at all cutting down the gun hunt just some of the dummys that do it.
