I think alot of things could play into this. What kind of angle was the shot? Quartering to/from? Broadside? High angle (from 15-20 feet in tree stand)? Was it a pass through? Was the arrow recovered?
How did the deer react after the shot? What kind of blood was on the scene of the hit? Any hair at the scene? If so what kind? Any water nearby? How long did you wait before following the trail?
Did the animal ever bed down before you lost the deer? Did it sound like the arrow hit the shoulder/bone?

the deer was perfect broadside shot about 25 yards and 15 feet high the arrow stuck but the deer pulled it out and it did make a loud noise when it hit and there is a spring on the property and he ran toward it. i'm sorry for being so brief but just in a rush thanks alot for any info.

Ok, So I assume you got the arrow back? Or did it break and you only got some of it back? How far did the shot penetrate? Sounds like you hit him sqaure in the shoulder. I would check cover near the spring. This would be a good place to start. More than likely,
he probably laid up in heavy cover after the shot if not pushed too hard. Even if he was pushed and is/was still alive, he'll probably head back to the water to bed/drink. He won't want to move too far to get the water, so he's probably bedded near the spring. If you don't find him, you may find where he bedded (blood).

If you waited at least an hour before you trailed him then there is a good chance that he may be down. If you think you may have bumped him he could be a long way by now. I have found at times especially bucks will tend to circle back to watch for the danger so you will have to start a grid search. Checking near the water is always a good place but if that fails go back to the last spot you had blood and see if the deer made a straight line to that spot or seems to be circling. Look over the terrain and decide where you would go if you were hurt and wanted to hide. Get some friends and spread out from the hit site and check all available cover. If this doesn't work go back to the hit site and start going in increasing circles.
