I have the "Hatchbag" for my Explorer. With the back seats down it covers the whole truck and it's heavy duty. I also had the game rack for the receiver, but that gets in the way when you're not using it and you still have to wrap the deer anyway to transport.

does your rig have a reicever? why not just get a small utility trailer and pull behind you? It's what I use. I drive a ford ranger with a topper, but it's carpeted and always have hunting gear in it. So the trailer is a great option for me.

I always traveled with a plastic tarp during deer season. When I got one I just through it in the back of my Explorer and thru the deer in on top. If you're all bent on carrying it on top, just hooktwo ropes to it, throwthem over a limb, hookoneto your car, pull it up with the car, tie it off withthe otherrope. Back under it and let it down. Problem being, finding a tree near by with a limb to throw the ropes over. I guess you could use a screw in step or something to get it up, pull it out with another rope and let it down. I guess you could try your tarp skid bit with a rope around a tree in front, run it over the top and downto the deer. Back up pulling the deer up and over, but it'd put some serious rope burns on you car unless you put in a skid bar or two or something. Hey, how about the old Indian levers. You know, a couple lodge poles tied together. Attach the deer to the apex, run a rop out and pull the lodge pples and deer up and drop 'em on the car. I can see it now. Hunter killed by falling deer.[8D]

Hoist the deer into a tree, drive the blazer under it, and lower the deer back down onto the roof.

I would agree with FM....check your owner's manual or look at the rack itself. Just about all the roof racks I've ever seen are actually only rated for about 150 lbs.
Another option you may have depending on the year of your vehicle, is some of the automotive products Cabelas sells like the cargo area protectors for SUV's. We put one in my fiancee's Trailblazer, and it has a 2" lip all the way around it, so liquids can't go all over the place and the prices are reasonable too.
