TASTE. I just broke open an acorn fresh off the tree and tried it. At first it seemed real bland, but after about 20 seconds it went to this real nasty bitter taste!!! I wounder if they would be better cooked? Have you ever tried a raw one?

I never have tried one for fear that I would start grunting, rubbing my head on the wall, and follow my wife around sniffing her backside to see if she is ready yet.
I have heard/read that there is quite a difference in taste between acorns from a White Oak, and those from a Red Oak. One is generally really bitter tasting, and the other is usually sweet which is what the deer prefer. Can't remember which way it goes, but one of the threads on here covers that.

Be careful. Red oaks have a substance in them, that can make you quite ill. They can be safe to eat if you boil them for a half hour and drain off the liquid. White oaks are better tasting, but certainly nothing I'm taking home for snacks.
