Default RE: Finding deer using topo maps

The way that I have used them in the past it to first look for what would be a natural funnel, where deer may have the easiest time traveling . second, look for where several ridges coming together , bucks tend to stroll ridges, in hopes of smelling does that the wind carries their smell up and out of bottoms that are narrow, if they can cover several bottoms this way they will. Deer are primarily lazy and creatures of habit, so easy ways to food and bedding create ideal paths for them to walk. I really have never really seen a body of water ,creeks and streams and such that deer did not travel along side for a period of time also. HUNTING PRESSURE plays a big part here ,deer will change a pattern very quickly if they feel intruded upon. I like the TOPO mixed with an actual photo to see clear cuts, hardwoods, and thick brush. I beleive that all have some place in hunting, but nothing I have found is a substitute for scouting. I hope this helps you.~Ben
