Default Doe Estrus scents - use pre-rut or not?

I hear that doe estrus will scare does off and is ineffective for bucks pre-rut.

Anyone know anything about this? This will be my first year hunting deer, and I want my best chance to get ANY deer, doe or buck.

bowtex I will just pass on what I have heard, hopefully someone with more experience with lures will reply. I have rarely used any lures in the past, but I will be using them this year, I am doing a field test of scent dispensors this year for Buck-n-Good so will be experimenting quite a bit.

I know for a fact that bucks, especially young ones, once they have rubbed all thier velvet off well, do start looking for the ladies and will respond to a doe blea., I would assume that if they are looking for a willing lady, doe in estrus would at least bring in the young bucks. I could be dead wrong.

as a general rule doe estrus or doe in heat scents should not be used to early.if they are used to early they can and will spook deer, all the deer.a hunter should know the exact status of the rut before using lures such as this.the only way this can be accomplished is to spend alot of time in the woods.if the bucks are chasing doe, with nose to the ground and breathing hard but the doe are not standing still for them(pre rut) ,this is a good time to try estrus lures.during the period of when the doe stop running and stand still for the buck(rut),estrus lures tend to be less effective.the period just after standing still for the bucks(post rut)the lure becomes effective for a shot time.and just as using it to early, using it to late will have the same effect.

I'll print this one more time for those that missed the study. In Bowhunter magazine, a study was printed on the effects of scents.

In several mock scrapes, they put four scents into and setup cameras to record the activity..

The 4 scents were, buck urine, doe urine, human urine and NEW CAR SMELL.

The results were as follows:

Bucks and does visited the scrapes with buck urine and the ones with human urine the most and of equal frequencies.

The scrapes with doe urine tied with the scrapes with NEW CAR SMELL and neither were frequented as much as buck urine and human urine....

Conclusion, although I've had limited success with doe estrous scents, save your money and rely on a combination buck grunt, doe bleat call.

Thanks Rob. That saved me about $21.99.

In my attempts to &quot;scare deer&quot; away from certain scrapes so they would visit the ones I was hunting, I urinated in the &quot;bad&quot; scrapes. I saw NO DEER at the uncontaminated scrapes, but scared off a decent buck at the one I thought I had ruined!

BTW--I'm gonna set up shop--sellin' it cheap!!! <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Today's small bucks are tomorrow's trophies.

On the other hand, using doe in estrus scent during pre-rut can also be beneficial. Bucks that find an area where this scent is remember the location if it's one of the first areas they've smelled it in and will often return once the rut is winding down or if they can't find any other receptive does.
