Well if he plans on using it for grazing it'll hurt. But, find outwhat he plans on doing with it first. Underbrush, saplings, alpha field, etc,will be a good thing.

David is right. A lot can happen between now and Oct. in that dirt. A couple of years ago I had a landowner burn some acerage that I turkey hunted 3 weeks before the season opened. It really irritated me, but I found in that 3 weeks, new stuff sprouted, bugs came in to eat it, turkeys came to eat the bugs, and I killed the 2 biggest gobblers of my life with ash all over my boots and butt. I know burning is a different than poisoning, but you might be surprised at what happens with the land.

All of this has been handled in a very perfessional manner from our end (6 hunters) we are in a catch "22" area, here's the deal Landowner owns around 10-15,000 acres, several ranches that are together. The entire Johnson Ranch little over 5000 acres is leased by a "Day lease outfitter and they offer two season leases on this property, one is 750 (3 hunters) acres and then you have our lease which is 1450 acres (6 hunters)... The rancher used a product called "Brash" which is a really nasty weed and brush killer. It was sprayed to improve the habitat for Cattle not deer the native grasses are the only thing that will not die off so its great from the ranchers stand point...the cattle will be able to graze on the grass, no fields will be planted.. Here's what we are faced with , the loss of 450 acres of our lease, so what we are asking for from the Day lease outfitter is a respectable cost adjustment for the lease, or being able to hunt the adjacent property that is directly east of us to make up for it.. I think it is a very reasonable offer from us ... We will see tonight and tommorrw all parties invovled in the hunting side of it are going to try and work out a plausable settlement to keep everybody happy, and the hunting will go on.

I know I'm way out of my geographical area here , concerning whats common practice , whats legal , and whats not , but this "Brash" doesn't sound so environmently friendly where local wildlife is concerned. I dont think I'd be wanting to eat any burgers from the cattle that will be grazing there.[:'(]
I take it that controlled burns aren't done in Texas due to the dryness?

Actually controlled burns are very popular in this part of the country, in fact we burned about 700 acres just this past week. But mesquite and most other brush in south Texas will not be killed with a controlled burn. The trees will green up within no time, or when we get the first big rain. But when we use chemicals like Remedy, the trees are dead forever and we no longer have to worry about them.

We use remedy for mesquiite, and juniper. If all the vegetation is dead, I doubt anything will grow before this fall.
