Just got back from my buddies garage where we were shooting at a new block 4x4. He went out and bought a new rest a rip cord and got his arrows refletched. So we started to paper tune in, after 5 minutes we had a bullet hole in the paper. Then we started the walk back method from 5 yards to 30 yards and got his arrows flying great. 1 pin 0-25 yards, not a bad start 4in groups at 30 yards. We were using 100 grain field tips. WE also tried to sight in his broadheads, the rockets flew great but after a dozen shots the broadheads began flying weird, I first thought it was him getting tired, then I noticed the blades were waved on the broadhead a little bit, They were not like that before, How can a broadhead's blades damage shooting into a block target? He didn't hit anything out of the ordinary. So we took a new on out of the package and shot it, it must have been a defect or something, turns out the blades were different sizes, the two on top were the same but the bottom one was smaller, is this common? This was quite a interesting night, I asked to look at his old broadheads he bought last year that he didn't use and he had up stairs, low and behold they too were defective. Two good one and one smaller, he had 3 packs like this , what are the chances of this, 100,000 to one or greater, this could be very well the problem, it just dosen't make sense.

I tend to agree with Matt as well and further discussion here bears that out. Your most recent shooting of the head seems to verify that there may have been an issue with incorrect blade sizes. If the blades disengaged during impact then that would account for the poor blood trails and somewhat the loss of deer.

I have bought 3 packs of the Ultimate Steels because I am so fond of their expandables. I have not run into this problem nor have I had issue with blade retention though I suspect that was a problem with the initial design and they made modifications not long after people started complaining about it.

I like the Ultimate Steel but if you are looking for other suggestions then the Slick Trick 100s or NAP Nitrons would get my vote.

I'm trying to get him to switch from ultimate steels to magnus stingers, come on guys help me out, give me some advantages of the magnus opposed to the ultimate steels.

Other than the fact that in my opinion (which means nothing)it is a higher quality head, a lifetime warranty is about as good as it gets.

I wish I could help but I have no use for large surface area, cut on contact style broadheads. Good luck in your quest though.

Whats funny about bacon skinners is100 grains are 7/8 cut and 75 grains are 1 inch cut.I shoot rockets at hogs and they go right through them.I also shoot mini blasters 75 grain mech heads at deer they have a 1 and 3/4 cut.I agree not broadheads fault

Good news , my friend shot one of my muzzy's and it flew great, he went out and bought some muzzy's 100gr 3 blade. Couldn't believe they flew that good out of his bow. Thanks for all the help.

You can't go wrong with a tried and true Muzzy. There are many good fixed AND expandables on the market today. The Rocket line is a good head but not as durable as some. The steelheads have given my son several clean kill pass-throughs at 55#. His bow is well tuned. I think your friend will do well with the Muzzys but the Rockets should have been O.K. also.

Ilosta buck with a 100grn ultimate steel the first week of last years bow season. I guess it was a bad shot on my part, I think it hit a branch but I had very little blood trail. I blame it on the 7/8 cut. They do shoot and penetrate well but I feel if it was a different head, I might have found the buck. That night I put on my Wasp Jack Hammers that I had left from the year before and target shot in the headlights to see where they hit. I killed two bucks and heard both go down. This year I have bought two packs of Magnus Stingers. Hard to beat from what I have read.
