Default Lyman Deerstalker problems,still!!!!!!

My son, whom shoots backwards[he is left handed],bought a left handed Deerstalker,3 or 4 years ago.
All seemed well, until the wedge fell out and could not be found!!!! I got a new one from Lyman,at over $14. He lives 150 miles from me so my daughter was down to visit him and brought it back to me.
I took the new wedge and it fell into the slot and fell back out!!!! I researched the problem on the net and figured i better take to a black powder gun smith! While it was there,10 days or so,i told him to install fibre optic sights on it.
Well,i went to pick it up,he hands it to me and the wedge falls out onto the counter! I said you were suposed to fix that! He took it back, into the work area and every time he handed it to me i would sqeeze the fore end and the wedge would fall out! After awhile it stayed in. Thats good,i thought? The new sights looked good and easy to see!
My son came to visit me over the week end. Well,as with Murphys law, both the ranges i go to were having things going on Sat& Sunday! He stayed over till Monday and we went to shoot! Boy o boy,can that kid[47 years old] shoot that gun? We started at 25 yards and got it centered,at that distance, than started to do 50. It was like 6 plus inches to the right but only 2 0r 3 inches high,so he moved the rear sight over. The next shot went clean over the back stop!!!!!! When he moved the sight over and snug it down it raised it almost out of the slot. While we looked at that, the darn wedge feel out! I feel like crape and looked like a real bone head? He took the gun home.
I don't know what to do,with the wedge problem,the sights,i will get him a better set,i guess?
Any ideas?

Mountainman, adjusting wedge fit is and easy fix and certainly not a gunsmith job. Lay the wedge on a hard surface supported by two nails - one under each end of the wedge so the wedge forms a bridge from one nail to the other. Tap the center of the wedge with a hammer to create a slight bend. Try it in the gun with the bend up, and with the bend down. If the tension is not to you liking, increase the bend (or decrease it if necessary). Wedge fit will definitely have an effect on point of impact. So the sights may need to be adjusted once you get the wedge the way you want it.

If I understand the sight issue correctly (still shooting high with the rear sight at its lowest adjustment?) you will need a higher front sight. But take care of the wedge issue first. A tight wedge just might move the POI down.

By the way, I've requested this post be moved from the Reference Forum to the regular Black Powder forum. You'll get more action there.

Adjusting the wedge is in the manual.

If your not ready to bend the new wedge a trick you can do it test if it will fix the problem and show you how much you need to bend it...

take some duct tape. Tear it so it fits through the wedge slot on the bottom of the barrel. Put about two or three layers there and then try setting the wedge again. If its nice and solid that gives you an idea of how much bend the rifle will need. And since you have a nice tight wedge, that's a good time to go shoot...

Wow it's a shame you had to have the rifle in the GS for 10 days for a 20 min job of replacing the sights and adjusting the wedge tension. Two easy fixes. You should have came here first and we could have saved you a lot of time.

Bronko, I did try to do it myself?????? I tried to adjust the wedge,as per Lyman instructions, and was afraid i wood hurt the gun!
The front sight or sight set,i got Lyman fibre optic sight set. The front one was way to wide to go into the sight slot! As per the instructions,on the package,i did a little filing and then it was too small and fell thru! Now i have a rear fibre optic sight and no front one!!Lyman wants $19 and shipping for it?????
I gave up and thought i made a good decision to take it to a shop!!!
All i know is it is a shame how things are no longer what they should be and you still have to pay top dollar?
